Generational Astrology – Introduction (Part 1)

Introduction to Generational Astrology

On the Threshold of Aquarius

If you have been following this blog you may be slightly confused by a statement suggesting that we are on the threshold of Aquarius when the Aquarian age arrived many centuries ago.  However since the arrival of the Aquarian age in 1433 AD, no period stronger than a 15 year Aquarius micro-age[1] has been encountered.  The last Aquarius micro-age was 1910-1925 with its overflow extending until 1940, and its momentum extending until 1945.  Therefore anyone born after the 2nd World War, which includes all Baby Boomers, has never encountered, nor experienced, a serious period of Aquarius.  The most that has been experienced are small 15 month Aquarius nano-ages.[2]   The last Aquarius nano-age was from around January 2005 until April 2006 with its overflow period extending until July 2007.

Though relatively minor, some Aquarius associated events (i.e. democracy and fascism,[3] people power, progressive politicians, flight, IT technology etc.) that occurred in the recent 2005 to 2007 Aquarius nano-age and overflow include:

  • The first free Parliamentary elections in Iraq since 1958
  • Saudi Arabia held its first ever municipal elections (for male citizens only)
  • Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak asked Parliament to amend the constitution to allow multi-candidate presidential elections
  • Tabaré Vázquez was sworn in as the first President of Uruguay from a leftist party
  • 800,000 people gathered for an opposition rally in Beirut, a month after the death of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. It is the largest rally in Lebanon’s history.
  • The Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan reached its climax with the overthrow of president Askar Akayev
  • The Taiwanese government called on 1 million Taiwanese to demonstrate in opposition to the Anti-Secession Law of the People’s Republic of China. Between 200,000 and 300,000 attend the walk.
  • The Airbus A380 made its first flight
  • Kuwaiti women were re-granted the right to vote
  • Violent anti-G8 demonstrations occurred in Gleneagles, Scotland
  • The 2005 French riots began after two young immigrants die while hiding from the police
  • 2006 – The UN voted overwhelmingly to establish the UN Human Rights Council
  • Twitter (the popular social-networking service) was founded
  • A scramjet jet engine, designed to fly at 7 times the speed of sound, was successfully tested
  • Montenegro declared independence after a 2006 referendum
  • The International Astronomical Union redefined ‘planet’, demoting Pluto to the status of ‘dwarf planet’
  • The Royal Thai Army staged a coup d’état removing the democratically elected Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra from power.
  • The former Soviet republic of South Ossetia held a referendum on independence from Georgia
  • Al Jazeera English was launched
  • The military seized power in Fiji against a democratically elected prime minister
  • Steve Jobs, announced the first generation iPhone
  • The President of Ukraine dissolved parliament, following defections that increased the majority of his opponents.
  • Ethnic Russians rioted in Estonia, about moving a Soviet World War II memorial – two of the worst nights of rioting in Estonian history.
  • Live Earth Concerts were held throughout nine major cities around the world. [4] [5] [6]

Each of the above newsworthy items[7] has a strong association with Aquarius but the whole period was under the sway of a Pisces micro-age overflow (2005-2010) and so this little Aquarius nano-age period is limited in what it can do.  However, from around December 2014, this is no longer the case as the world has moved from a Cancer micro-age (2000-December 2014) to a Gemini micro-age (Dec 2014 – Nov 2029).  Dividing this new Gemini period into its three decans finds the first micro-age decan encountered is the Aquarius micro-age decan (December 2014-December 2019) and its overflow the following five years with its most powerful time the Aquarius quasi micro-age decan (Jun 2016 – Jun 2022).  Even though the Aquarius micro-age decan commencing around December 2014 is at its absolute weakest strength, we should relatively quickly find one or more examples of Aquarius (and Gemini) flexing their new-found muscles.  Relatively quickly means the next 24 months.

Established archetypes associated with Aquarius include: sudden or unexpected developments; electricity; eccentricity; dictators and tyrants (reactionary politicians), all freedom–loving archetypes such as all forms of independence, freedom and equality, new teachings, liberty and fraternity, and a more secular, free thinking liberal view of the world (the modern liberal democratic political system), humanitarianism, ideals, reformers, non–profit and altruistic organizations, socialism, revolutions and revolutionaries, radicals, rebels, and extremists, plus civic responsibility, schizophrenics and mental diseases, fringe dwellers, different or abnormal behavior, astrology, astronomy, explorers and anything exciting or bizarre. Anything new including modernity, fresh developments especially in the scientific, mechanical and electrical fields, concepts and views of the future, the avant–garde, unique developments, and science fiction (with Pisces). Finally Aquarius does everything quickly, like a bolt of lightning or with unprecedented speed.

Russia and possibly Germany appear to benefit under Aquarius.  Russia’s eccentric and erratic nature is its link to Aquarius plus the Russians spearheaded the anti-establishment worldwide communist revolution in the early 20th century. Germany’s link to Aquarius is from its technical exceptionalism, historical associations with totalitarian leaders and its avant garde currently manifesting as pro-green and pro-environment.  Naturally the Green Party anywhere has strong Aquarius credentials.  Aquarius is the second strongest sign in the signature for the USA but sublimated by Pisces, its strongest sign.  The USA rose to its status of the leading world power under the Pisces sub-age and overflow (1851-1910-1970) resulting in a distorted or stressed relationship between the USA and Aquarius, because though the USA ostensibly promotes Aquarian freedom and democracy, it really promotes free trade for its (Pisces) corporations and democratic jingoism to mask the reality that everything is set up for business and the wealthy.  A focus upon Aquarius is therefore stressful for the USA (the Great Depression occurred in the last Aquarius micro-age overflow) and the USA has always had trouble with people power and left wing politics. Aquarius is associated with world government[8] which therefore includes anything associated with the UN, G8, G20 etc.

Not only should we experience Aquarius and Gemini making a greater impact in the world, we should also see examples of their opposite signs (Leo and Sagittarius) in retreat or being subjugated.  One minor example of this in the previous nano-age and overflow period was the regal (Leo) marriage of Price Charles to Camilla Parker Bowles at a mere civil ceremony in April 2005 with the general public still pining for their idol, Princess Diana.  Therefore Leo (and Sagittarius) archetypes are under threat in the coming period.  Other Leo archetypes include the United Kingdom, Paris (and France), gold, heat, mainstream societal values, all forms of amusements, games, bright colors (South America), stained glass, bees and the color yellow. Moses is also closely associated with Leo indicating a connection to Judaism and thus we can expect much conflict in Israel, and the Occupied Territories over the coming decade.[9]  The Jews do not resonate well with Aquarius.  Aquarius is the traditional ruler of the Arabs.

The end of the Gemini micro-age in 2029 marks the end of the 59 year Gemini sub-age decan (1970-2029) and the beginning of the major Aquarius sub-age decan and overflow (2029-2089-2148).  Though the current Aquarius micro-age decan and overflow under investigation is not on the same scale nor included within the approaching major Aquarius sub-age decan and overflow, research on previous sub-age decans indicates that the current Aquarius micro-age decan and overflow (2014-2019-2024) is a preview of the coming Aquarius maelstrom and some seeds developed in the Aquarius micro-age decan period will flourish in the coming Aquarius sub-age decan.  On the economic front, the new Aquarius sub-age decan and overflow should put an end to the excessive share (stock) values generated by the long term bull market that commenced in the Leo micro-age (1985-2000) though the real punch is unlikely to be experienced until around 2021 at the apex of the Aquarius micro-age decan and overflow bell-curve.

In addition to the arrival of the Aquarius micro-age decan, between December 2014 and 2029 a very special event takes place that has not occurred since 5122 BC.  Until 5122 BC (in the Gemini age), the world was the closest in temperament to the society still being shaped by mankind in today’s Aquarian age in the 21st century.  From around December 2014, for the first time in over 7,000 years the world will be passing through an age, sub-age and micro-age that all aligned with Water and Air – with no Fire or Earth in sight.  This occurrence will occur nine times in the Aquarian age, with the first three occurring between 2014 and 2148.  What can be expected in the period 2014 to 2029 – the first of nine such periods in the Aquarian age?  We can expect great instability, but also progress – one way or another.  Though doom and gloom pundits may predict a 3rd World War I don’t think this is a possibility as astrologically the world is turning away from war. Climate change is the real issue!   (Details can be found at A Celebration 7,000 Years in the Making )

While the Aquarius micro-age decan is on our doorstep (as of December 2014), the major player on the micro-age decan and micro-age level remains Cancer as the Cancer micro-age (2000 – Dec 2014) is at its apex and entering its most powerful quarter in its overflow period lasting until around June 2022.  For more details on the role of Cancer in the world today, see Cancer – the New Paradigm for the World

As breaking news identifies developments of an Aquarian nature, I will add them to the end of this post or as comments on this post.

A Funny Thing Happened in the 21st Century – Part 1

The astrological ages behave like mighty ocean waves. Each age-wave mimics each other age-wave, in shape, size and velocity, but the variation is in the archetypes associated with each wave.  Each wave brings a different set of archetypes with it.  The problem with astrological ages is that they are spaced around 2,150 years apart and very few people can contextualize a series of historical currents separated from each other by 2,150 years.

Dividing an age into three equal parts creates age-decans with each age-decan in the order of around 700 years may be slightly more palatable, but the time spans involved are still taxing for most people.  Sub-ages of around 179 years each may be a little more familiar to many people as most people have some kind of familiarity with the Renaissance followed by the Age of Maritime Exploration with the Scientific Age closely on its heel.  Next came the Industrial Revolution leading to the worldwide population explosion, followed by the Atomic Age and now we have the desultory period of post-modernism.  Sub-ages enter the realm of relative familiarity.

In the same way that ages can be divided into three decans, so can sub-ages.  It is my observation that the smaller sub-age decans of approximately 60 years is the most palatable way for most people to relate to history because 60 years approaches the average span of life.  The normal person will have personal experience of at least two sub-age decans over the course of their life, and the cultural remembrance of the sub-age decan experienced by their parents or grandparents is so strong, that a third sub-age becomes almost as real as the two that are directly experienced.  For Baby Boomers at least, they have direct experience of the Scorpio sub-age decan, the current Gemini sub-age decan, with handed down tales of the Pisces sub-age decan of their grandparents, supplemented with the movies of the 1930s we saw as kids on TV.  Younger generations may be too removed from the Pisces sub-age decan, but they should assimilate the arrival of the coming Aquarian sub-age decan in 2029!

These 60 years sub-ages are not only understandable by most people due to their direct experience, they also seem to dictate the geopolitical reality of the world that sits upon the collective expectations and reality of the world’s population.  The sub-ages provide a structure to analyze what can be expected to occur in the current 21st century.  The 21st century is mainly focused upon the Gemini sub-age decan (1970-2029) followed by the Aquarius sub-age decan (2029 – 2089).  These two sub-ages are the first two of three sub-ages of the Libra sub-age (1970-2148).  The funny thing is that the current 21st century will be ‘milder’ than last century and next century.

Before delving into the sub-age decans of the current 21st century (2001 to 2100) it is important to place the 21st century into context.  The 21st century sits between the 20th and 22nd centuries.  The 21st century is not only bookended by each of these two centuries but also dwarfed by each of them.  The 20th and 22nd centuries are far more powerful than the current 21st century.  This can be readily explained.

The 20th and 22nd centuries each have a sub-age cusp located within them whereas the 21st century lacks such an event.  The Scorpio sub-age came to an end in 1970, and the current Libra sub-age will truncate in 2148.  Each of these cusps can be viewed as the crest of their respective waves.  The wave associated with a sub-age is the third strongest of all the waves, and is only exceeded by the age-decans’ and age cusps’ waves. In a superficial analysis, the fact that the current 21st century has no wave of the size of a sub-age cusp may indicate that it is a ‘lessor’ century.  This may or may not be the case because approximately every second century lacks a sub-age cusp.  Since 1000 AD, the 12th, 14th, 16th and 19th centuries all lacked a sub-age cusp.  It is very possible that each of these centuries were subordinate to the centuries that did contain a sub-age cusp.  A superficial examination of all the centuries since 1000 AD in Wikipedia does qualitatively support this notion but even if true, it is probably a moot point.

So while our 21st century is bereft of a sub-age cusp, it sits directly under the path of the Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970-2148) which in essence is like a tsunami passing over a hapless world. Scorpio does not bring peace or security but disaster and regeneration.  Scorpio is not the sign of war, but it is the sign of terrorism and terrorists. It is the sign of underground criminal networks and disenchanted individuals willing to die for whatever cause.  It is the sign of vulnerability where despite statistical indications to the contrary, people feel that crime, death from war and violence and premature death is occurring more frequently. Scorpio is also the sign of debt, so instead of countries being rated on their gold reserves, they are rated on their debt level.  People use credit cards instead of cash.  The recent GFC was extremely painful for many who had borrowed heavily to fund their stock portfolios.

However, the great scourge associated with the Scorpio wave that peaked in 1970 and is now washing over the world is pollution. Some astrologers have a problem with pollution being associated with Scorpio, but in reality, pollution is the excrement of our modern enlightened society and associated economy.  Many people fear the advent of the Third World War, but the scourge of this century is not a world war but something that has the potential to be just as deadly.  Of course atomic bombs and nuclear power stations are ruled by Scorpio, and their proliferation since the arrival of the Scorpio sub-age decan overflow in 1970 plus some of the nuclear accidents that have occurred to date, strongly suggest that nuclear radiation contamination is also in the hand of cards now being played.  Fukishima again demonstrated our increasing vulnerability to nuclear accidents.

Not everything is dark and gloomy with Scorpio, after all, sex is a strong Scorpio archetype. The Sexual Revolution unleashed in the 1960s and 70s aligned to the peak of the Scorpio wave has fundamentally changed western society and continues to ripple out to the rest of the world. The arrival of legalized gay marriage in some regions of the western world demonstrates that the Scorpio wave of sexual liberation is showing no signs of faltering.  Even Muslim countries like Malaysia have recently allowed their gays to come out of the closet while more backward nations have strengthened their anti-homosexuality laws – but the focus remains on Scorpio.

Is Scorpio a doom-laden gloomy sign compared to most other signs? This is a matter of perspective.  Certainly a key attribute of Scorpio is its death-rebirth nature.  On the one hand this breeds born-again Christians (and seemingly born-again Muslims) but on a more significant perspective, it indicates a time of renewal following a breakdown.  Is the world breaking down?  Is it renewing?

I recently had the fortunate experience of attending the 2014 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in Bali.  This was not the first time I had attended one of these festivals in Bali, but it was the first for a few years.  It is a great place to feel which direction the wind is blowing.  The almost unanimous consensus by the writers, intellectual s and attendees was that the direction the world is heading is wrong.  Specifically the economic paradigm introduced or forced upon the rest of the world by powerful western nations (since the arrival of the Pisces age overflow in the 15th century) benefits the minority rich at the expense of the vast majority of the world population.  The accumulation of wealth by a few is disproportionate to the number of extremely poor people in the world.  Furthermore, the environmental degradation of the world is a direct consequence of this unquenchable quest for wealth by those who basically are already wealthy in relative terms.

In contrast to chasing wealth, many people at the festival expressed the need to find value from non-materialistic aspects in life.  This was probably best expressed by Keibo Oiwa from Japan who is a cultural anthropologist, film-maker, environmental activist, public speaker and the author of over 50 books.  His slogan for the future was the need to be ‘slower, smaller and simpler’. He received much applause.  Thus we are seeing the dawn of a new perspective on the modern world, one not focused upon wealth and power but upon quality and happiness.  No one was calling for the destruction of capitalism but the sentiment was that capitalism will have to be house-trained.

Keibo Oiwa is not alone, and ever since the 1960s and 70s there has been a small but growing number of people attempting to live an alternative lifestyle or opting out of the money-centric world of extreme capitalism that we now find ourselves in.  Is the shopping mall a sign of progress?  One Balinese teacher complained how her youthful students were totally focused upon what we would call junk-food, because in their eyes, cool people overseas ate rubbish at McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the like – anyone with a white skin was considered cool.  It seems that humans are like chimpanzees that want to mimic each other.

This alternative urge towards house-trained capitalism and quality of life over wealth will be a growing phenomenon of the current 21st century but for a while, this new movement will be dwarfed by terrorism, epidemics, failed states, criminal gangs, tyrannical leaders and megalomaniac states but this does not mean a rebirth is not in progress.  According to Malcolm Gladwell, author of “The Tipping Point”, it only takes about 20% of the population to move towards a new idea, trend, or social behavior which then crosses a threshold and spreads like wildfire.  Already in Australia, about 10% on average of the voting population vote Green in every election.  How many decades until this figure is 20%?

The work is certainly cut out for the world in the 21st century, but any examination of the two centuries that sandwich the 21st century suggests that while change is imminent, due to the Scorpio wave passing over the whole of this century, the level of destruction or chaos that will be experienced in the 21st century is limited. The destructive influence on both the 20th and 21st centuries are much greater compared to the 21st century.  We have already passed through the 20th century, and survived, and the inherent problems in the 21st century should not be as great, despite contemporary society’s pessimism.  A funny thing about the present 21st century is that it should be ‘milder’ on humanity compared to the previous 20th century.

Notes

All ages and sub-periods behave like a wave in the shape of a bell curve.  When any period commences, it is at its weakest point, and steadily build in strength to its apogee at the end of its period.  It then breaks like a wave and washes over the following period like a wave in what is called its ‘overflow’.  Research indicates that the sign associated with any period appears stronger in the overflow period.  For example the Scorpio sub-age was 1791 to  1970 but Scorpio will appear to diversify much further in its overflow period compared to its period proper. A funny thing about the present 21st century is that it should be ‘milder’ on humanity compared to the previous 20th century.

SCORPIO in Retrospect

Over six years ago my article SCORPIO – the Sign of the Times was published in the Astrological Monthly Review (Vol. 68, No. 11, November 2006, pages 27-31). In that article I identified the prime concepts that were expected to appear with the Scorpio hotspot (2005-15):

  • Revolution, terrorists and general instability
  • tyrants with their cruelty
  • death, assassinations and murder
  • waste products from any process, which naturally includes sewage and pollution
  • atomic energy and bombs
  • almost everything associated with sex
  • taxes and debt (including credit cards)
  • underground criminal organisations
  • spy networks

The period 2005 to 2015 is the key Scorpio time associated with the Scorpio micro-age decan (2005-10) and Scorpio micro-age decan overflow (2010-15) sitting as the middle decan within the Cancer micro-age (2000-15) (see table below). Within the Aquarian age, the most relevant aspect that relates to the whole 21st century is Scorpio.  This is because there are twelve sub-ages in each age, and the Scorpio sub-age existed from 1791 until 1970.  Due to the fact that ages and their sub periods behave like waves the following period 1970 to 2148 demonstrates the dispersion of the Scorpionic energy (technically the Scorpio sub-age overflow) over the following Libra sub-age.  There are twelve sub-ages in each astrological age.  Furthermore each sub-age has twelve micro-ages of approximately 15 years each, with each micro-age consisting of three decans of approximately five years each The Scorpio micro-age decan ran from 2005 until 2010, with its overflow period 2010 to 2015 – but with its most potent time from 2007 until 2012 (the top of the bell curve) which I term the Scorpio quasi-micro-age decan (2007-12) though the whole period 2005 to 2015 is the full Scorpio hotspot as this little Scorpio micro-age decan resonates with the momentum of the Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970 – 2148).

The main correlation to Scorpio was not emphasized in the above list from 2006. The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) appeared right on target with the arrival of the Scorpio quasi-micro-age decan (2007-12) and mainly departed by the end of 2012 except for some remnant kicking and screaming by southern peninsular European countries (and this can be expected to continue until 2015). I did list ‘taxes and debt (including credit cards)’ but the GFC was a significant magnification of these issues especially related to debt.  I doubt if few people would disagree that 2007 to 2012 was extremely out of kilter with the economic norm we have come to expect in the modern world.  As a result, people have been focused upon reducing their debt including credit cards that is proving to be an anti-stimulus to the economy.  One of the major political issues in the USA over the course of this period is the political impasse over the US debt limit.  The Democrats want to increase taxes, while the Republicans want to decrease expenditure – but both are strong Scorpio archetypes. This is unlikely to be fully resolved until 2015.  The reduction in expenditure, consumption and debt will be an ongoing theme in the First World for the next century and a half with this little Scorpio hotspot a foretaste of the new world economic paradigm.  While the First World slows down, the Developing World will be full steam ahead (until they catch up and then suffer the same fate).

Scorpio archetypes include revolution and general instability.  The widespread flare-up of disenchanted citizens in many Middle Eastern countries since early 2011 included: Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Jordan, Mauritania, Sudan, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Djibouti, Morocco, Iraq, Somalia, Bahrain, Iran and Kuwait.[1]   From an astrological perspective, it is interesting that the revolutionary fervor is basically located in Middle Eastern Muslim nations, while the similar revolutionary fervor of the 1960s and 70s was mainly associated with Western nations (the main exception to this was Iran).  The current Middle Eastern instability is occurring in the Cancer micro-age (2000 – 2015).  Cancer is the main sign associated with Islam, and also has long antecedents in the Middle East (Cancer is always associated with the middle of anything).

While the Middle Eastern unrest is mainly a drive against authoritarian leaders (Capricorn), all the other revolutionaries around the world are busy blowing up churches, mosques, temples and innocent people to further their extremist agendas.  They are also empowered by the current Scorpio hotspot as terrorists belong to Scorpio.  The recent assassination of Osama bin Laden has multiple Scorpio archetypes attached to it – terrorism, revolutionary leader, assassination, and spy networks.

Tyrants are also strongly associated with Scorpio, and they received a lot of attention from the arrival of the current Scorpio hotspot– and top of the list was Colonel Gaddafi of Libya, but he was not alone in his obnoxiousness.  In real terms the first prize should go to the late Kim Jong-il of North Korea – shelling a South Korean inhabited island, launching provocative missiles, sinking a South Korean naval ship and always threatening to produce nuclear weapons. His son has continued along the same path to date.  It is one of those ironies of the astrological ages and politics that the same sign Scorpio breeds revolutions and tyrants.  They both seem to appear relatively simultaneously and the French Revolution at the very beginning of the Scorpio sub-age (1791-1970) was its first classic example.

The key nuclear issue associated with the current Scorpio hotspot is the Japanese disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant following the tsunami in March 2011.  This is the greatest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986 and both events are the only two nuclear accidents to measure Level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale.[2]  Until this nuclear accident, the current Scorpio hotspot had seen a sharp revival of interest in building more nuclear reactors around the world to a level not seen for decades (since the previous Scorpio hotspot).  Currently 60 nuclear plants are under construction – with the majority in Asia and many existing plants are being upgraded.  The plants in operation in 2009 provided 15% of the world’s electricity. 155 nuclear reactors are in the planning stage with another 320 proposed.[3]  As one adverse aspect of this new push towards nuclear energy, the German government suffered some serious political humiliation early in 2011, after the Japanese tsunami, due to its strong promotion of nuclear power prior to the Japanese accident. Japan even temporarily put on hold plans to expand its nuclear energy. The world will progressively turn to nuclear power over the coming 150 years bringing its attendant benefits and disadvantages.

On the sexual front the push to decriminalize homosexuality and legalize gay marriage has definitely seen a marked revival around the world over the last five years.  In the Scorpio micro-age and overflow (1955-70-85), the sexual focus was mainly upon the impact of the contraceptive pill. The focus has shifted from heterosexuals to homosexuals in recent years but for most gays, they may have to wait for the Aquarius quasi micro-age decan (2017 – 2022).  Surveys state that  even in socially conservative Australia the general public want this issue resolved but politicians prefer to placate the minority conservative religions.  Of course, the exposition of the sexual depravity and aberrations of many priests, church officials and some youth organisations over the last five years has left an indelible stain on many organisations, especially the Roman Catholic Church.  Such is the extent of the problem that even Australia’s Cardinal Pell has recently advocated for married priests.

We have had some classic and major intrigues associated with spies.  Firstly the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko, a former officer of the Soviet KGB and later an agent of the British MI6 and Spanish secret services who is alleged to have been murdered at the end of 2006 by radioactive polonium-210[4] – anything radioactive belongs to Scorpio.  His murder about two months before the technical start of the Scorpio quasi-micro-age decan means he was murdered at the very end of the previous Pisces quasi-micro-age decan with Pisces the ruler of poisonings.  He was affected by both Pisces and Scorpio as his death occurred in the Scorpio micro-age decan (2005-10).  Another classic spy scandal was the unearthing of the Russian sleeper spy cell in 2010 with 10 agents arrested.  Some agents had been in the USA since the mid 1990’s.[5]  Even the recent revival of the James Bond franchise suggests a renewed fascination by the general public with spies.  The highly successful Sopranos and related TV series focused upon mafia gangs and criminals ties in tightly with the Scorpio hotspot. In 2013 TV Guide ranked the Sopranos in the Top 10 list of The 60 Greatest Dramas of All Time.[6]

Did the Scorpio hotspot (2007-12) within the Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow (2005-15) demonstrate a heightened manifestation of Scorpio archetypes?  The GFC is probably the most potent example of Scorpio in this time frame but the Fukushima nuclear accident is a close second.  Revolution and general instability mainly in the Middle East has also demonstrated a strong Scorpio focus.  The killing of Osama Bin Laden and all other listed items from 2006 strongly suggest that Scorpio has recently been peaking in world affairs.  Even the massive loss of ice in the Arctic ultimately as a repercussion of pollution is a double Scorpio archetype – Scorpio rules both ice (fixed water) and pollution (the world’s waste).  From 1948 until 2002, the average decline of ice in the Artic was 3% per decade.  Right on target in 2007, the loss of Arctic ice significantly increased – far more than the decrease of ice at the Antarctic.  As a result, for the first time in recorded history, the Northwest Passage opened to ships without the need of icebreakers.[7]

The next Scorpio period of the same magnitude of the recent Scorpio hotspot is the Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow (2059-64-69) – something to warn your grandchildren about.  We are now at the very beginning of the Cancer quasi micro-age decan (2012-2017) and so the emphasis has shifted to Cancer – but we can still expect some significant remnant Scorpio developments until 2015 – especially aligned to the ten months of the Scorpio nano-age decan and overflow in the last part of 2014 and early 2015 (probably indicating the next significant but temporary downturn of the stock market). Under Cancer, the general public becomes even more fickle, and Capricorn leaders around the world are being undermined, one way or another.  Many heads will roll (politically) but the USA is on course for its first female president.  Long term plans (such as reigning in pollution to prevent destructive climate change) are temporarily against the collective desires of the Cancer general public who generally cannot see beyond immediate emotional issues and their wallet.  Don’t worry, the Aquarius quasi-micro-age decan (2017-22) will bring back some forward planning, innovative developments but also some heightened revolutionary fervor (for better or worse).  The period 2017 to 2022 will be the first solid experience of Aquarius for surviving Baby Boomers.

US Presidents in the Age of Aquarius

The recent elevation of Barack Obama to the Democratic contender for the 2008 presidential elections in the USA has been linked by some commentators to the Age of Aquarius.  For many people the 1960s and 70s was the Age of Aquarius (see The Aquarian age did not begin in the 1960’s or ’70s).  I decided to have a look at the relationship between US presidents and the generational markers within the Age of Aquarius.

While most people now about the Aquarian age, and some people know that the Age of Aquarius follows the Age of Pisces, very few people realize that within the Age of Aquarius are twelve sub-ages.  These sub-ages last approximately 179 years each.  Within the sub-ages are twelve micro-ages per sub-age.  These micro-ages are approximately fifteen years each.  These fifteen years micro-ages provide the generational markers that identify one generation from the next.

As a classic example, between 1940 and 1955 was the Sagittarius micro-age.  Sagittarius is associated with archetypal themes of expansion, growth, optimism and good luck.  This Sagittarian micro-age correlates to the Baby Boomer generation.  The Baby Boomer generation is considered to apply to those people born from 1946 to the early 60s – a period slightly longer than 15 years and slightly out of phase of the Sagittarius micro-age by about six years.  Anything that booms can be related to Sagittarius unless it is the boom of a gun.

I discovered some interesting correlations when all the US presidents are examined, commencing with George Washington.  Either the voting public has preferences to specific generations or specific generations are over-represented amongst politicians that run and win the presidency (or vice presidency).  For example 42% of all presidents were born in Air generations (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius).  30% of presidents were born in Fire generations (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius) while only 16% were born in Water (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces) and 12% in Earth (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn).

There are an unequal number of Earth, Air Fire and Water generations available and the weighted average is 27% for each of Air, Fire and Earth while Water is 20%.  This indicates that the worse performing element is definitely Earth at 12% which is 15% below average (Water at 16% is only 4% below average).  This disparity between Air and Fire to Water and particularly Earth tentatively indicates that politicians are drawn more from Air and Fire generations and slightly less than average from Water and significantly below average for Earth.  Alternatively the voting public prefer candidates from the Air and Fire generations over the Water and especially Earth generations.

Whatever the case, Air indicates intelligence and intellect while Fire indicates dynamism, drive and leadership.  Perhaps these qualities are stamped upon presidents from these Air and Fire generations.  Water and Earth signs indicate empathy, sensitivity and compassion respectively.  These generational traits are at a low ebb in US presidents to date, especially the qualities of practicality and sensibility.

Examining the zodiacal signs associated with the generations indicates that more presidents are born in Aquarian generations than any other sign.  19% or almost one in five presidents were born in an Aquarian generation whereas from a random statistical analysis only 12.5% of presidents should be born in an Aquarian generation.

There are only two possible Aquarian generations that presidents have been born – the first is 1746-1761 and the second 1910-1925.  In the 18th century Aquarian generation are presidents Monroe and Madison.  In the 20th century Aquarius generation are George Bush senior, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon and John Kennedy.

There may be an urban myth that Aquarius breeds a radical and rebellious nature, similar to those revolutionary times of the 1960s and 70s, but this is only one possibility associated with Aquarius.  Aquarius indicates strong civic responsibility regardless of the side of politics.  Aquarius engenders fascism as much as democracy and personal freedoms.  There are always two sides to each zodiacal sign.  Regardless of the political leanings of the politicians, somehow far more politicians born in Aquarian generations get elected president compared to the average.

This brings us to the current scenario of Barack Obama and John McCain – and to this I will add Hillary Clinton.   Hilary Clinton comes from the Baby Boomer generation ruled by Sagittarius.  Presidents born in Sagittarian generations are about average in numbers.  Sagittarian generation presidents are presidents Buren, Tyler, Taylor, Bill Clinton and George W Bush.

John McCain was born in a Capricorn generation.  Capricorn generations significantly under perform with only 7% of presidents from a Capricorn generation when the weighted average should be 12.5%.  There are only three presidents from a Capricorn generation all born in the 18th century – John Quincy Adams, General Jackson and William Harrison.

Barack Obama was born into a Scorpio generation and is only one of two signs that have never had a president (the other sign is Virgo) but this is due to a statistical anomaly as there has not been a Scorpio micro-age available since the formation of the USA until the Scorpio micro-age 1955-1970.  Therefore no conclusion whatsoever can be drawn from Barack Obama’s birth in a Scorpio generation.

Therefore Barack Obama is the wild card in the draw.  Capricorn generational presidents appear below average and we don’t have any idea how Scorpio will perform except possibly from the fact that Scorpio is a Water sign.  Water signs do perform slightly below average but John McCain’s Earth sign is at the bottom of the totem pole.

The only other inference is that Barack Obama is born in the generation that coincided with the student revolution, anti-war and sexual revolution of the 1960s that carried over into the 1970s.  Scorpio is a sign of revolution (on a bad day) and change you can believe in on a good day.  How much of these Scorpio associations are insinuated into Barack’s Scorpio generation is anyone’s guess?

There are also finer generational markers within the micro-age generations based on decans.  Each micro-age generation of 15 years has three decans of five years.  These decan influences provide a favoring or color to the major generational influence.  For example both George W Bush and Bill Clinton (and Hillary Clinton) came from the Leo decan of the Sagittarian Baby Boomers.  Leo implies strong leadership (both good and bad) and support to mainstream values.  Leo does not like to rock the boat because Leo believes it is the boat!

John McCain’s decan influence is Capricorn – the same as his generational sign thus strengthening his Capricorn credentials.  Only one President to date has been born in both a Capricorn generation and Capricorn decan – President William Harrison (b.1773 – d.1841).  President William Harrison shares some uncanny traits with John McCain.  Harrison was ex-military, gaining distinction in fighting the American Indians and as a general in the War of 1812.

President Harrison was also the oldest president until Ronald Reagan.  Interestingly Capricorn is the sign that rules old age and the elderly.  Unfortunately for President William Harrison he died thirty-one days into his term – the briefest presidency in the history of the office.  No other US president was born in a Capricorn decan of any other generation.

Barack Obama was born in the Pisces decan of the Scorpio generation.  The only other presidents who were born in Pisces decans (but not in Scorpio generations) are Thomas Jefferson, Grover Cleveland and LBJ.  Thomas Jefferson was an intellectual and apart from his civic responsibilities he was a horticulturist, statesman, architect, archaeologist, paleontologist, author and inventor.  Pisces is a dual sign (represented by two fish swimming in opposite direction) and so when Pisces is strong the field of action is split.  Jefferson was obviously interested in more than just politics.

Grover Cleveland had an image of purity and “… possessed honesty, courage, firmness, independence, and common sense. But he possessed them to a degree other men do not.”  Cleveland was a Democrat island in a sea of Republican presidents that ruled from 1860 to 1912 – except for Cleveland.  Cleveland is the only President to serve two non-consecutive terms – perhaps this is the manifestation of Pisces duality?

LBJ won a resounding victory in 1964 on a platform extolling the “Great Society” legislation that included civil rights laws, health care for the elderly and poor, aid to education, and the “War on Poverty.”  His reputation on the political Left was significantly tarnished by escalating the war in Viet Nam.  Pisces is also the sign related to social security, charity and compassion as well as bureaucracy (big government) and self-made problems.  LBJ also demonstrated the Pisces duality with successful domestic policies and fatal foreign policies in Viet Nam.

If the Pisces influence on Barack Obama’s generation manifests and if he wins office we should expect a two edged sword associated with the dual-bodied sign of Pisces.

The only other way of understanding Barack’s Scorpio generation is to examine those presidents that were born in the opposite generation – Taurus.  Only two presidents were born in a Taurus generation – Coolidge and Hoover.  Coincidentally both were born in the Virgo decans within their Taurus generation, also directly opposite Barack Obama.  Therefore presidents Coolidge and Hoover come from diametrically opposite generations compared to Obama.

Republican Coolidge (1923-29) was anti-union, anti-big government, avoided scandals, and was very popular with the electorate when he left office.  He promoted the values of the average person and was fondly remembered by President Reagan’s administration – especially for the fact that Coolidge left the free market economy to itself.

President Coolidge was succeeded by the Republican President Hoover (1929-33).  Hoover was more interventionist than Coolidge and believed that social and economic problems could be solved by technical solutions. However Hoover was unable to provide any real solutions to the Great Depression.  Furthermore opposition to Prohibition during his presidency ensured that Hoover was only a one term president.

As a sign Taurus is conservative, unable to evolve or change, and prefers to keep things as they are rather than risk any turmoil.  Both Coolidge’s and Hoover’s presidencies support the insinuation that Taurus generations promote Taurus’ qualities.  If Taurus breeds Republicanism and passiveness it should be expected that Obama’s generation is more to the Left and pro-active in promoting change.

What is the mood of the US public?  The preference for strong leadership of Clinton and Bush junior is a continuing factor but less evident than in the last two elections.  Americans still want a strong leader, and the strong showing of Hillary Clinton’s supporters demonstrates this aptly as Clinton’s generation markers are the same as her husband and Bush junior.

However the world is in a transition stage between Leo and Cancer micro-age influences and an increasing number of Americans will be looking for a president with sensitivity and diplomacy.  Cancer is opposite John McCain’s Capricorn generational signature, and while he would profile a leader with backbone, this is not what Americans are moving towards in their favorite characteristics for the new president.  Public opinion is growing in strength to the detriment of a leader who goes against public opinion for their personal belief in what is best for the country.  Thus Obama is also favored over McCain in this respect.

Finally within the current micro-age influence, the decan influence is moving from basically Pisces in the 2004 election to Pisces/Scorpio in the 2008 election.  Under Pisces the American public is always captivated by spin, propaganda, superficiality and anything that promotes the American Dream.  Pisces remains strong, but has recently been slightly eclipsed by the incoming Scorpio decan.  The Scorpio decan must favor a president from Obama’s Scorpio generation as the new Scorpio decan demands change and evolution.

The American public does not want a revolution.  They want a leader with enough strength or leadership to maintain mainstream values, at least pay lip service to the American Dream but make some changes.  This we have Obama’s slogan “change we can believe in”.  The incoming Scorpio thrust will be much more powerful than the average micro-age decan influence as it resonates with the powerful Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970-2148).  Scorpio is always synonymous to unsettled times, revolutions, terrorism and vented pent up frustrations.  The main stage for this new Scorpio influence will stretch from 2009/10 to 2014/5.  Therefore any incoming president will have to deal with deep and intense issues over the coming few years.

The sub-periods of the Aquarian age favors Obama’s generation over McCain’s generation in the 2008 election, but this is not a prediction or pronouncement that Obama will beat McCain.
