Falling Terrorist Fatalities Linked to the End of Scorpio?

Some astrologers have a problem linking Scorpio to terrorists, but a simple examination of a scorpion with its stinging tail attacking whatever comes into its path seems a fitting archetypal description of a terrorist.  Furthermore, terrorist do not behave like exposed (Aries) armies, they hide like (Scorpio) spies.  However, theory is never the ruling paradigm in astrology – it is always evidence, either from statistical sources or traditional astrological methodology.  Whenever a Scorpio period appears, terrorist activity escalates.  This is why terrorism is ruled by Scorpio!

The following graph indicates the total fatalities from terrorism from 1970 to 2016.

The above graph displays a peak in 2014 (43,566 fatalities), with fatalities mildly dropping away in 2015 (38,464) and continuing this trend in 2016 (34,676).  The biggest peak in fatalities earlier than 2014 was in 2007 (12,858), and if we take the period 2007 to 2014, this coincidentally or otherwise, correlates with most of the Scorpio sub-age decan and overflow (Jan 2005 – Jan 2010 – Dec 2014). The Scorpio sub-age decan and overflow, as with all ages and sub-periods of the ages, is not homogenous, and can be likened to the monthly lunation cycle.  As with the four phases of the Moon, each age and sub-period have four stages, but there are differences between these stages.  The first stage is always the weakest.  For example, the Age of Aquarius and its overflow (1433 – 3574 – 5697) has four stages, the first stage (1433 – 2506) is the weakest stage for Aquarius in the Age of Aquarius. This is the stage the world currently finds itself located within.

In striking contrast, this same timeframe is stage 3 of the Pisces age and overflow (732 BC – 1433 AD – 3574) and stage 3 is the strongest of all the stages.  Stage 3 (1433 to 2506) marks the 1073 years which is the most powerful period for Pisces in the 26,000 year cycle of the astrological ages. This is why, despite being in the rational Age of Aquarius, the world is more influenced by the Pisces age overflow (until 2506 AD) – and so Pisces ruled archetypes such as the USA, Europe, corporations, religious beliefs, drugs, oceans, chemical weapons and plastics appear to have a greater influence upon the world compared to Aquarian archetypes.

The four stages of the Scorpio sub-age decan and overflow:

1. Jan 2005 – Jul 2007
2. Jul 2007 – Jan 2010
3. Jan 2010 – Jul 2012
4. Jul 2012 – Dec 2014

Excluding the first and weakest of the above stages, this leaves the remaining three stronger stages affecting the period July 2007 to December 2014, which is closely aligned to the peak in terrorism fatalities as indicated in the above graph.

There are other astrological influences possibly influencing the above graph promoting 2014 such as the end of the Cancer micro-age (Feb 2000 – Dec 2014) or the beginning of the Gemini micro-age (Dec 2014 – Nov 2029).  Alternatively, the Cancer micro-age is exactly the same period as the Leo micro-age overflow, so it is also possible that the downturn in fatalities is linked to the substantially reduced influence of Leo after 2014?

Based on the evidence, it appears that all these three possible influences may contribute to the drop in terrorist fatalities, but probably only in minor ways.  The biggest growth in terrorist fatalities since the arrival of the Cancer micro-age in 2000 is in the Middle East, and the Middle East is ruled by Cancer, and so the above graph does seem to show the increasing fatalities in the Middle East since the arrival of the Cancer micro-age.  However, this increase is modest before 2007 to 2014.

The disappearance in December 2014 of Leo as an active player is hard to reconcile with terrorist fatalities as Leo is not normally associated with either terrorists or fatalities.  Leo however, does sit at the 10^th house position to Scorpio, so perhaps the departure of Leo is linked to the demotion of terrorists as perceived “leaders”?  If this is the case, it is probably a marginal reason for the decrease in terrorist fatalities.

Finally, what about the arrival of Gemini at the end of 2014?  Gemini does sit in the 12^th house position to Cancer, suggesting that the influence of the Middle East (associated with Cancer) has entered a 12^th house ending phase.  The arrival of ISIS in full regalia could even be considered a self-made problem for the Middle East as the arrival of the Gemini micro-age in December 2014 is remarkably synchronous with the beginning of the peak of ISIS – which by December 2015 held a large area in western Iraq and eastern Syria including the city of Mosul.  Its main target was Muslims who just had the misfortune of living in Iraq or Syria. This could be construed as a 12^th house self-made problem within Islam, though, without acknowledging the gross destabilization of the Middle East with the invasion of Iraq by the USA and its allies in 2003, and the absolute waste of trillions of dollars to undertake this useless folly, it’s hard to see how the self-made problem was limited to the Middle East.

I have not done any thorough research on Korea, but I have tentatively associated Gemini with Korea, as the split in Korea forming North and South Korea occurred in the opposite Sagittarius micro-age (1940 – 1955), and civil wars often occur when an active sign is opposite a key sign in a country’s astrological signature.  Just having Korea split into two is indicative of Gemini. The increasing focus on the Korean peninsula in recent times aligned with the arrival of the Gemini micro-age (Dec 2014 – Nov 2029) supports this Gemini association.

The USA can never be comfortable in any Cancer period as sitting just below Pisces and Aquarius on its totem pole, sits the sign Capricorn. Capricorn explains many of the arch-conservative social and political polices of the descendants of the self-made Puritans who arrived in America towards the end of the Capricorn sub-age (1433 – 1612) but mainly in the more powerful Capricorn sub-age overflow (1612 – 1791).  The Puritans are ruled by Capricorn.

Currently, the main adversaries of the USA include China and the Middle East with both ruled by Cancer. Cancer is also strong in the astrological signature of Russia.  The USA has taken umbrage at another Cancer country, New Zealand, for refusing entry of its warships as New Zealand declared itself a nuclear free zone and the USA will not declare which of its naval vessels have nuclear weapons. American right-wing politicians regularly denounce the strong and successful socialism of Scandinavian countries – with Scandinavia ruled by Cancer – the sign of the common people.

The American Civil War occurred in the most potent stage 3 (1851 – 1881) of the Cancer sub-age decan and overflow (1791 – 1851 – 1910) of the Scorpio sub-age (1791 – 1970).  This antipathy between Capricorn and Cancer explains why the USA was attacked and humiliated by the 9/11 attack very close to the beginning of the Cancer micro-age (2000 – 2014) as the Cancer 7^th house focusses upon the opponent, Islam and the Middle East.

Americans should beware of the astrological birthday of the American Civil War as it is just around the corner. The American Civil War (1861 -65) occurred towards the end of the last Gemini micro-age (1851 – 66) associated with either the Gemini micro-age decan or Libra micro-age decan overflow with both covering the period May 1861 to April 1866.

The same period next decade is November 2024 – November 2029, but while the micro-age and micro-age decans will be identical to the American Civil War, the Cancer influence is only from the 15 year Cancer micro-age overflow (2014 – 2029), and not the massive 59 year Cancer sub-age decan overflow (1851 – 1910) associated with the Civil War.  Therefore, while the astrology does not suggest a civil war for the USA next decade, it does indicate a major political stress zone similar to the lead up to the American Civil War.  It appears that the political atmosphere in the USA will remain and get even more tumultuous before it gets better!  Fortunately, the first coup or destabilization of the integrity of the United States government is not expected until around the middle of the next century at the cusp of the Libra and Gemini age-decans.  Age-decan cusps have a highly consistent history of destabilisation – especially for age-empires like the USA.

Once the almost 30 years Cancer micro-age and overflow concludes in 2029, the emphasis should severely shift away from the Middle East, and it may also drop with regards to China.  The second sign on China’s totem pole is Libra (including much of Asia), and with the Libra sub-age (1970 – 2148) we should expect that China maintains its new and highly influential role in world affairs, but with the absence of the Cancer period, the intensity should drop off (for a while).

Cancer is being replaced with the overlapping Gemini micro-age and overflow (2014 – 2029 – 2044) but underpinned by the massive Gemini sub-age decan and overflow (1970 – 2029 – 2088). This does suggest that the Korean peninsula may be a longer and more entrenched problem compared to the Middle East, or that there is a stronger and longer focus upon the Korean peninsula in the coming decades for better or worse.  Gemini also rules Iraq and Syria (probably due to the hangover from Mesopotamia – the age-empire of the Gemini-Taurus age).  Gemini should also produce an increase in stridency from students and youth, something that we have recently seen with the anti-gun movement in the USA, and as early as 1989 with the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre in China.  Gemini, sitting at the lowly 4^th house to Pisces, is a difficult sign for Pisces-Aries Europe and Pisces-Aquarius USA and sits at the difficult 12^th house position to China’s primary sign of Cancer.

We have already seen some fragmentation of Europe with the UK’s Brexit and the growth of neo-fascism in some of the eastern European nations, with some of these nations expressing a desire for further distance from the European Union, and the USA appears to be on the path back towards isolationism.  Trump’s pitch to the USA ‘homeland’ is therefore unlikely to be a transient phenomenon, as the USA has periodically preferred isolationism.  Regardless of any sustain isolationist tendencies in the coming decades, the emphasis on the USA’s 4^th house does not suggest raising the flag of the USA high up the mast in world affairs. It is probably a significant astrological factor why the USA gets egg on its face when it has attacked other nations since Gemini arrived in 1970 – commencing with the Viet Nam  War. Furthermore, the USA tangibly rode the Sagittarius sub-age and overflow (1612 – 1791 – 1970) to economic and political glory indicating a strong affinity between the American psyche and Sagittarius.  This suggests that the American psyche is in for hard times under Gemini, apart from Gemini activating the 4^th house of Pisces.

After taking into account the influence of Cancer, Leo and Gemini associated with the drop in terrorist fatalities, the greatest likelihood is that the drop in terrorist fatalities since 2014 is due to the end of the almost 10 year Scorpio influence (Jan 2005 – Jan 2010 – Dec 2014).  Some readers may complain that there seems to be a spurt of terrorist activities lately, and this can adequately be accounted for by the appearance of a 10 month Scorpio nano-age decan and overflow (Jun 17 – Nov 17 – Apr 18) of the Pisces nano-age (Jun 17 – Sep 18), the third nano-age in the current Gemini micro-age (2014 – 29). Fortunately, this Scorpio influence should now be at an end, or almost so.

A Funny Thing Happened in the 21st Century – Part 1

The astrological ages behave like mighty ocean waves. Each age-wave mimics each other age-wave, in shape, size and velocity, but the variation is in the archetypes associated with each wave.  Each wave brings a different set of archetypes with it.  The problem with astrological ages is that they are spaced around 2,150 years apart and very few people can contextualize a series of historical currents separated from each other by 2,150 years.

Dividing an age into three equal parts creates age-decans with each age-decan in the order of around 700 years may be slightly more palatable, but the time spans involved are still taxing for most people.  Sub-ages of around 179 years each may be a little more familiar to many people as most people have some kind of familiarity with the Renaissance followed by the Age of Maritime Exploration with the Scientific Age closely on its heel.  Next came the Industrial Revolution leading to the worldwide population explosion, followed by the Atomic Age and now we have the desultory period of post-modernism.  Sub-ages enter the realm of relative familiarity.

In the same way that ages can be divided into three decans, so can sub-ages.  It is my observation that the smaller sub-age decans of approximately 60 years is the most palatable way for most people to relate to history because 60 years approaches the average span of life.  The normal person will have personal experience of at least two sub-age decans over the course of their life, and the cultural remembrance of the sub-age decan experienced by their parents or grandparents is so strong, that a third sub-age becomes almost as real as the two that are directly experienced.  For Baby Boomers at least, they have direct experience of the Scorpio sub-age decan, the current Gemini sub-age decan, with handed down tales of the Pisces sub-age decan of their grandparents, supplemented with the movies of the 1930s we saw as kids on TV.  Younger generations may be too removed from the Pisces sub-age decan, but they should assimilate the arrival of the coming Aquarian sub-age decan in 2029!

These 60 years sub-ages are not only understandable by most people due to their direct experience, they also seem to dictate the geopolitical reality of the world that sits upon the collective expectations and reality of the world’s population.  The sub-ages provide a structure to analyze what can be expected to occur in the current 21st century.  The 21^st century is mainly focused upon the Gemini sub-age decan (1970-2029) followed by the Aquarius sub-age decan (2029 – 2089).  These two sub-ages are the first two of three sub-ages of the Libra sub-age (1970-2148).  The funny thing is that the current 21st century will be ‘milder’ than last century and next century.

Before delving into the sub-age decans of the current 21st century (2001 to 2100) it is important to place the 21^st century into context.  The 21^st century sits between the 20^th and 22^nd centuries.  The 21^st century is not only bookended by each of these two centuries but also dwarfed by each of them.  The 20^th and 22^nd centuries are far more powerful than the current 21^st century.  This can be readily explained.

The 20^th and 22^nd centuries each have a sub-age cusp located within them whereas the 21^st century lacks such an event.  The Scorpio sub-age came to an end in 1970, and the current Libra sub-age will truncate in 2148.  Each of these cusps can be viewed as the crest of their respective waves.  The wave associated with a sub-age is the third strongest of all the waves, and is only exceeded by the age-decans’ and age cusps’ waves. In a superficial analysis, the fact that the current 21^st century has no wave of the size of a sub-age cusp may indicate that it is a ‘lessor’ century.  This may or may not be the case because approximately every second century lacks a sub-age cusp.  Since 1000 AD, the 12^th, 14^th, 16^th and 19^th centuries all lacked a sub-age cusp.  It is very possible that each of these centuries were subordinate to the centuries that did contain a sub-age cusp.  A superficial examination of all the centuries since 1000 AD in Wikipedia does qualitatively support this notion but even if true, it is probably a moot point.

So while our 21^st century is bereft of a sub-age cusp, it sits directly under the path of the Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970-2148) which in essence is like a tsunami passing over a hapless world. Scorpio does not bring peace or security but disaster and regeneration.  Scorpio is not the sign of war, but it is the sign of terrorism and terrorists. It is the sign of underground criminal networks and disenchanted individuals willing to die for whatever cause.  It is the sign of vulnerability where despite statistical indications to the contrary, people feel that crime, death from war and violence and premature death is occurring more frequently. Scorpio is also the sign of debt, so instead of countries being rated on their gold reserves, they are rated on their debt level.  People use credit cards instead of cash.  The recent GFC was extremely painful for many who had borrowed heavily to fund their stock portfolios.

However, the great scourge associated with the Scorpio wave that peaked in 1970 and is now washing over the world is pollution. Some astrologers have a problem with pollution being associated with Scorpio, but in reality, pollution is the excrement of our modern enlightened society and associated economy.  Many people fear the advent of the Third World War, but the scourge of this century is not a world war but something that has the potential to be just as deadly.  Of course atomic bombs and nuclear power stations are ruled by Scorpio, and their proliferation since the arrival of the Scorpio sub-age decan overflow in 1970 plus some of the nuclear accidents that have occurred to date, strongly suggest that nuclear radiation contamination is also in the hand of cards now being played.  Fukishima again demonstrated our increasing vulnerability to nuclear accidents.

Not everything is dark and gloomy with Scorpio, after all, sex is a strong Scorpio archetype. The Sexual Revolution unleashed in the 1960s and 70s aligned to the peak of the Scorpio wave has fundamentally changed western society and continues to ripple out to the rest of the world. The arrival of legalized gay marriage in some regions of the western world demonstrates that the Scorpio wave of sexual liberation is showing no signs of faltering.  Even Muslim countries like Malaysia have recently allowed their gays to come out of the closet while more backward nations have strengthened their anti-homosexuality laws – but the focus remains on Scorpio.

Is Scorpio a doom-laden gloomy sign compared to most other signs? This is a matter of perspective.  Certainly a key attribute of Scorpio is its death-rebirth nature.  On the one hand this breeds born-again Christians (and seemingly born-again Muslims) but on a more significant perspective, it indicates a time of renewal following a breakdown.  Is the world breaking down?  Is it renewing?

I recently had the fortunate experience of attending the 2014 Ubud Writers & Readers Festival in Bali.  This was not the first time I had attended one of these festivals in Bali, but it was the first for a few years.  It is a great place to feel which direction the wind is blowing.  The almost unanimous consensus by the writers, intellectual s and attendees was that the direction the world is heading is wrong.  Specifically the economic paradigm introduced or forced upon the rest of the world by powerful western nations (since the arrival of the Pisces age overflow in the 15^th century) benefits the minority rich at the expense of the vast majority of the world population.  The accumulation of wealth by a few is disproportionate to the number of extremely poor people in the world.  Furthermore, the environmental degradation of the world is a direct consequence of this unquenchable quest for wealth by those who basically are already wealthy in relative terms.

In contrast to chasing wealth, many people at the festival expressed the need to find value from non-materialistic aspects in life.  This was probably best expressed by Keibo Oiwa from Japan who is a cultural anthropologist, film-maker, environmental activist, public speaker and the author of over 50 books.  His slogan for the future was the need to be ‘slower, smaller and simpler’. He received much applause.  Thus we are seeing the dawn of a new perspective on the modern world, one not focused upon wealth and power but upon quality and happiness.  No one was calling for the destruction of capitalism but the sentiment was that capitalism will have to be house-trained.

Keibo Oiwa is not alone, and ever since the 1960s and 70s there has been a small but growing number of people attempting to live an alternative lifestyle or opting out of the money-centric world of extreme capitalism that we now find ourselves in.  Is the shopping mall a sign of progress?  One Balinese teacher complained how her youthful students were totally focused upon what we would call junk-food, because in their eyes, cool people overseas ate rubbish at McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the like – anyone with a white skin was considered cool.  It seems that humans are like chimpanzees that want to mimic each other.

This alternative urge towards house-trained capitalism and quality of life over wealth will be a growing phenomenon of the current 21^st century but for a while, this new movement will be dwarfed by terrorism, epidemics, failed states, criminal gangs, tyrannical leaders and megalomaniac states but this does not mean a rebirth is not in progress.  According to Malcolm Gladwell, author of “The Tipping Point”, it only takes about 20% of the population to move towards a new idea, trend, or social behavior which then crosses a threshold and spreads like wildfire.  Already in Australia, about 10% on average of the voting population vote Green in every election.  How many decades until this figure is 20%?

The work is certainly cut out for the world in the 21^st century, but any examination of the two centuries that sandwich the 21^st century suggests that while change is imminent, due to the Scorpio wave passing over the whole of this century, the level of destruction or chaos that will be experienced in the 21^st century is limited. The destructive influence on both the 20^th and 21^st centuries are much greater compared to the 21^st century.  We have already passed through the 20^th century, and survived, and the inherent problems in the 21st century should not be as great, despite contemporary society’s pessimism.  A funny thing about the present 21st century is that it should be ‘milder’ on humanity compared to the previous 20th century.

All ages and sub-periods behave like a wave in the shape of a bell curve.  When any period commences, it is at its weakest point, and steadily build in strength to its apogee at the end of its period.  It then breaks like a wave and washes over the following period like a wave in what is called its ‘overflow’.  Research indicates that the sign associated with any period appears stronger in the overflow period.  For example the Scorpio sub-age was 1791 to  1970 but Scorpio will appear to diversify much further in its overflow period compared to its period proper. A funny thing about the present 21st century is that it should be ‘milder’ on humanity compared to the previous 20th century.

The Scorpio-Cancer Micro-Age Decan (2010-15)

Some incidents in recent weeks have again highlighted the strength of Scorpio associated events in the world.  Technically the world moved from the Scorpio quasi micro-age decan to the Cancer quasi micro-age decan around July 2012.  Quasi-ages have their uses – but the shift from the Scorpio quasi micro-age decan to the Cancer quasi micro-age decan in 2012 does not mean that Scorpios’ days are over.  To understand the true relationship of the transition from Scorpio to Cancer it is necessary to go back to basic principles.

The Cancer micro-age (2000-15) has three micro-age decans:

1. Pisces micro-age decan (2000-05)
2. Scorpio micro-age decan (2005-10)
3. Cancer micro-age decan (2010-15)

Any reader familiar with macro-astrology will know that every period associated with the astrological ages can be effectively doubled due to the overflow effect where the energy of the period builds to a crescendo towards the end of its period – which then overflows like a tsunami onto the following period.  The overflow effect is significant with the astrological ages due to its retrograde nature.  Each zodiacal sign is traditionally strongest at its beginning (i.e. the first decan of each sign is the same as the sign whereas the other two decans are of the same element but different signs).  Due to the retrograde motion, the decans of each sign are also reversed so the high point of any period associated with the astrological ages is at its end.  This reality is definitely not the norm in traditional horoscopic astrology.

If we take the Scorpio micro-age decan (2005-10) it will overflow onto the Cancer micro-age decan (2010-15).  Therefore the full scope of the Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow is 2005 to 2015.  However all periods are not homogenous – each period has a similarity to the four quarters of the lunar cycle.  The quarters are found by combining the quasi-period with the period proper plus overflow period.  The quasi-period is always the last half of the period proper plus the first half of the overflow period.  Therefore the Scorpio quasi micro-age decan is 2007-12.

As an example, the four quarters of the Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow (2005-15) are:

1. 2005-7 (this is the weakest quarter for Scorpio)
2. 2007-10 (this is stronger than quarter 1)
3. 2010-12 (this is stronger than quarter 2 and probably the strongest of all quarters)
4. 2012-15 (things may begin to weaken off, but this quarter is most likely stronger than quarter 2 (possibly between quarter 2 and 3 in strength).

The Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow (2005-15) is at Stage 4 (2012-15) while Cancer is at Stage 2 – and thus we have the opportunity to observe their relative strengths.  Depending upon the stage and circumstance, we can use the actual period, quasi-period or overflow period that produces the above four stages.  However my original nomenclature system based on pair-signs remains relevant. 2010 to 2015 can also be viewed as the Scorpio-Cancer micro-age decan. In the Scorpio-Cancer micro-age decan we can expect significant Scorpio events and a growing number of Cancer events.  This has definitely occurred over the last few weeks.

The recent major Scorpio events include: the whistle-blower who reported to the world the existence and extent of the US government spy grid; the sudden public explosion in Turkey against its democratic but autocratic-leaning government; and the Canadian government minister telling the world to get real about the existence of UFOs. Each of these three international newsworthy items has strong Scorpio underpinnings.  Cancer is also represented but at a less obvious level which may be part of Cancer’s shy archetype.

SCORPIO

Spy-grid

The US web based spy-grid is classic Scorpio as everything to do with espionage and secret activities are a Scorpio archetype. Furthermore this has occurred in a Leo nano-age (Jul 2012 – Oct 2014) and either at the end or near the end of the Sagittarius nano-age decan (Dec 2012 – May 2013).  Leo is anti-Aquarius and thus anti-democratic.  Sagittarius is anti-Gemini or located at the 7^th house position to Gemini.  This anti-Gemini nature associated with the Sagittarius nano-age decan is enhanced by the current Gemini sub-age decan (1970-2029) where all communication mediums are highly promoted.  This US spy-grid ticks a lot of boxes in 2013.  The whistle-blower is hiding out in Hong Kong (at the time of this article) and may seek refuge from the US government in (Cancer) China.  Even the whistle-blower is behaving like a crab.

Turkey

The widespread public demonstrations against the Turkish government is classic Scorpio and follows the pattern set by Libya, Egypt, Syria and so on but with two significant differences.  Firstly Turkey is already a democratic nation (supposedly) and this public ‘insurrection’ is much later than the other Middle Eastern uprisings.  In fact, the current Leo nano-age and overflow is a difficult period for insurrections in general – as has been recently experienced in Syria – where the rebels have commenced retreating from government forces and allied militias.  Leo periods always favour existing governments and leaders as Leo’s opposite sign Aquarius favors rebels.  Turkey however has Aquarius significantly placed in its astrological signature so in any Leo period, Leo activates its 7^th house of opposition.  The opposition has come out onto the streets of cities in Turkey!  Any country with Aquarius in its signature will tend to be out of synch with its neighbors.

UFOs

In June 2013 Paul Hellyer, Canada’s former defence minister, provided testimony at the 2013 Citizen Disclosure Hearing in Washington DC of the existence of  ET’s and UFOs, and that governments have known about their existence for many years – and even familiar with multiple races of ETs.  From an astrological perspective it is irrelevant about the authenticity of this claims, UFOs and ETs have Scorpio at the very top of their astrological totem pole.

 Miscellaneous Scorpio

A number of other events strongly associated with Scorpio have occurred in 2013 to date.  In fact, when examining the topic ‘2013’ in Wikipedia[1] the great majority of items had strong Scorpio associations.  In the period January to May 2013 there were 14 events listed of which only three events had no simple connection to Scorpio.  Some of the Scorpio events include:

• February – the first modern resignation of a pope in the (Scorpio) Roman Catholic Church
• February – the most powerful meteor to strike Earth’s atmosphere in over a century over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, injuring 1,491 people and damaging over 4,300 buildings
• March – Jorge Mario Bergoglio is elected the 266th pope.  In a significant break with tradition (Taurus opposite Scorpio) he is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere.
• March – The European Union agree to €10 billion (Scorpio) bailout for Cyprus. The deal precipitates a (Taurus) banking crisis in the island nation.
• April – Two bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon (domestic terrorism – Scorpio)
• April – An eight-story commercial building collapsed near the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka, resulting 1,127 deaths and 2,500 injured. The accident is the world’s deadliest (Taurus) structural collapse and the third worst industrial disaster in history.
• May – Oregon Health & Science University researchers report of the first creation of an human embryonic stem cells by cloning

In addition to the above, obtained from Wikipedia, in June 2013 the US Supreme Court ruled that naturally occurring human genes cannot be patented. Just because a gene can be isolated is not a reason it should be patented. South Africa went into its first death-watch on Nelson Mandala in June 2013.  Also later in 2013, the Megatons to Megawatts Program between the Russian Federation and the United States is expected to expire. The program that implemented the 1993 United States-Russia non-proliferation agreement to convert high-enriched uranium taken from dismantled Russian nuclear weapons into low-enriched-uranium for nuclear fuel.  Completion of the Megatons to Megawatts agreement may leave a gap in the supply of uranium fuel at a time when the global use of nuclear power is increasing.  Other sources of uranium supply will be necessary to meet current and future demand but the world has abundant uranium reserves.[2]

CANCER

One of the key archetypes associated with Cancer is ‘contained water’ which includes canals.  In mid-2013 Nicaragua announced its intention to construct a canal to rival the existing Panama Canal using (Cancer) Chinese funds.  The construction of both the Suez and Panama canals were associated with the powerful 59 years Cancer sub-age decan overflow (1851-1910) of the Scorpio sub-age (1791-1970).

A recent news item on TV caught my attention when it stated that the list of current shipping disasters is increasing.  Excluding people falling overboard and on-board rapes, a number of shipping disasters have occurred as Cancer grows in strength.  The sinking of the Costa Concordia in 2012 was a classic.  Two years earlier, at the very beginning of the Cancer micro-age decan, the Carnival Splendor, the little sister to Costa Concordia, was on a seven-day cruise to Mexico when its engine room caught fire in November 2010, causing passengers to cope with unflushed toilets, bags of vomit and only Spam to eat.  The company that owns both ships was formed in 1854 in a Cancer micro-age overflow (1851-66). One of Australia’s richest businessmen has announced plans to construct Titanic II at an estimated cost of $500 million and a completion date of 2016.  It is to be built in China and is to duplicate as much as possible the original Titanic.  Even in this (Cancer) story Scorpio ‘resurrection’ is included.

Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy as a preventative measure when it was discovered that she had a gene mutation that results in high rates of breast cancer.  This is (Scorpio) genes combined with (Cancer) breasts and the (Cancer) disease – cancer.

The space program of the People’s Republic of China will attempt its first unmanned Moon landing possibly in late 2013.

European floods

In June 2013 widespread flooding inundated several parts of central Europe.  In Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, rivers and lakes have flooded after extended periods of heavy rain.  The multi-billion dollar flood disaster has killed at least eighteen people in Central Europe after record flooding unprecedented since the Middle Ages hit major rivers in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Slovakia over a two week period. The Danube River in Passau, Germany hit the highest level since 1501, and the Saale River in Halle, Germany was the highest in its 400-year period of record.  Prior to the late May rains, Austria had its seventh wettest spring in 150 years, which had resulted in the ground in the region becoming saturated, leading to greater runoff when the rains began.  This was not a ‘normal’ flood.[3]

Conclusion

The same items in the Wikipedia topic ‘2013’ that displayed 14 events with 11 easily aligned to Scorpio had seven of these items aligned to Cancer – many items were aligned jointly to Scorpio and Cancer reflecting the current Scorpio-Cancer micro-age decan.  It is expected that as the world approaches 2015 the Cancer items will proportionally increase. Both Scorpio and Cancer appear strong in 2013 and it is difficult to state explicitly which one may be stronger.

SCORPIO in Retrospect

Over six years ago my article SCORPIO – the Sign of the Times was published in the Astrological Monthly Review (Vol. 68, No. 11, November 2006, pages 27-31). In that article I identified the prime concepts that were expected to appear with the Scorpio hotspot (2005-15):

• Revolution, terrorists and general instability
• tyrants with their cruelty
• death, assassinations and murder
• waste products from any process, which naturally includes sewage and pollution
• atomic energy and bombs
• almost everything associated with sex
• taxes and debt (including credit cards)
• underground criminal organisations
• spy networks

The period 2005 to 2015 is the key Scorpio time associated with the Scorpio micro-age decan (2005-10) and Scorpio micro-age decan overflow (2010-15) sitting as the middle decan within the Cancer micro-age (2000-15) (see table below). Within the Aquarian age, the most relevant aspect that relates to the whole 21^st century is Scorpio.  This is because there are twelve sub-ages in each age, and the Scorpio sub-age existed from 1791 until 1970.  Due to the fact that ages and their sub periods behave like waves the following period 1970 to 2148 demonstrates the dispersion of the Scorpionic energy (technically the Scorpio sub-age overflow) over the following Libra sub-age.  There are twelve sub-ages in each astrological age.  Furthermore each sub-age has twelve micro-ages of approximately 15 years each, with each micro-age consisting of three decans of approximately five years each The Scorpio micro-age decan ran from 2005 until 2010, with its overflow period 2010 to 2015 – but with its most potent time from 2007 until 2012 (the top of the bell curve) which I term the Scorpio quasi-micro-age decan (2007-12) though the whole period 2005 to 2015 is the full Scorpio hotspot as this little Scorpio micro-age decan resonates with the momentum of the Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970 – 2148).

The main correlation to Scorpio was not emphasized in the above list from 2006. The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) appeared right on target with the arrival of the Scorpio quasi-micro-age decan (2007-12) and mainly departed by the end of 2012 except for some remnant kicking and screaming by southern peninsular European countries (and this can be expected to continue until 2015). I did list ‘taxes and debt (including credit cards)’ but the GFC was a significant magnification of these issues especially related to debt.  I doubt if few people would disagree that 2007 to 2012 was extremely out of kilter with the economic norm we have come to expect in the modern world.  As a result, people have been focused upon reducing their debt including credit cards that is proving to be an anti-stimulus to the economy.  One of the major political issues in the USA over the course of this period is the political impasse over the US debt limit.  The Democrats want to increase taxes, while the Republicans want to decrease expenditure – but both are strong Scorpio archetypes. This is unlikely to be fully resolved until 2015.  The reduction in expenditure, consumption and debt will be an ongoing theme in the First World for the next century and a half with this little Scorpio hotspot a foretaste of the new world economic paradigm.  While the First World slows down, the Developing World will be full steam ahead (until they catch up and then suffer the same fate).

Scorpio archetypes include revolution and general instability.  The widespread flare-up of disenchanted citizens in many Middle Eastern countries since early 2011 included: Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Jordan, Mauritania, Sudan, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Djibouti, Morocco, Iraq, Somalia, Bahrain, Iran and Kuwait.[1]   From an astrological perspective, it is interesting that the revolutionary fervor is basically located in Middle Eastern Muslim nations, while the similar revolutionary fervor of the 1960s and 70s was mainly associated with Western nations (the main exception to this was Iran).  The current Middle Eastern instability is occurring in the Cancer micro-age (2000 – 2015).  Cancer is the main sign associated with Islam, and also has long antecedents in the Middle East (Cancer is always associated with the middle of anything).

While the Middle Eastern unrest is mainly a drive against authoritarian leaders (Capricorn), all the other revolutionaries around the world are busy blowing up churches, mosques, temples and innocent people to further their extremist agendas.  They are also empowered by the current Scorpio hotspot as terrorists belong to Scorpio.  The recent assassination of Osama bin Laden has multiple Scorpio archetypes attached to it – terrorism, revolutionary leader, assassination, and spy networks.

Tyrants are also strongly associated with Scorpio, and they received a lot of attention from the arrival of the current Scorpio hotspot– and top of the list was Colonel Gaddafi of Libya, but he was not alone in his obnoxiousness.  In real terms the first prize should go to the late Kim Jong-il of North Korea – shelling a South Korean inhabited island, launching provocative missiles, sinking a South Korean naval ship and always threatening to produce nuclear weapons. His son has continued along the same path to date.  It is one of those ironies of the astrological ages and politics that the same sign Scorpio breeds revolutions and tyrants.  They both seem to appear relatively simultaneously and the French Revolution at the very beginning of the Scorpio sub-age (1791-1970) was its first classic example.

The key nuclear issue associated with the current Scorpio hotspot is the Japanese disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant following the tsunami in March 2011.  This is the greatest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl in 1986 and both events are the only two nuclear accidents to measure Level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale.[2]  Until this nuclear accident, the current Scorpio hotspot had seen a sharp revival of interest in building more nuclear reactors around the world to a level not seen for decades (since the previous Scorpio hotspot).  Currently 60 nuclear plants are under construction – with the majority in Asia and many existing plants are being upgraded.  The plants in operation in 2009 provided 15% of the world’s electricity. 155 nuclear reactors are in the planning stage with another 320 proposed.[3]  As one adverse aspect of this new push towards nuclear energy, the German government suffered some serious political humiliation early in 2011, after the Japanese tsunami, due to its strong promotion of nuclear power prior to the Japanese accident. Japan even temporarily put on hold plans to expand its nuclear energy. The world will progressively turn to nuclear power over the coming 150 years bringing its attendant benefits and disadvantages.

On the sexual front the push to decriminalize homosexuality and legalize gay marriage has definitely seen a marked revival around the world over the last five years.  In the Scorpio micro-age and overflow (1955-70-85), the sexual focus was mainly upon the impact of the contraceptive pill. The focus has shifted from heterosexuals to homosexuals in recent years but for most gays, they may have to wait for the Aquarius quasi micro-age decan (2017 – 2022).  Surveys state that  even in socially conservative Australia the general public want this issue resolved but politicians prefer to placate the minority conservative religions.  Of course, the exposition of the sexual depravity and aberrations of many priests, church officials and some youth organisations over the last five years has left an indelible stain on many organisations, especially the Roman Catholic Church.  Such is the extent of the problem that even Australia’s Cardinal Pell has recently advocated for married priests.

We have had some classic and major intrigues associated with spies.  Firstly the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko, a former officer of the Soviet KGB and later an agent of the British MI6 and Spanish secret services who is alleged to have been murdered at the end of 2006 by radioactive polonium-210[4] – anything radioactive belongs to Scorpio.  His murder about two months before the technical start of the Scorpio quasi-micro-age decan means he was murdered at the very end of the previous Pisces quasi-micro-age decan with Pisces the ruler of poisonings.  He was affected by both Pisces and Scorpio as his death occurred in the Scorpio micro-age decan (2005-10).  Another classic spy scandal was the unearthing of the Russian sleeper spy cell in 2010 with 10 agents arrested.  Some agents had been in the USA since the mid 1990’s.[5]  Even the recent revival of the James Bond franchise suggests a renewed fascination by the general public with spies.  The highly successful Sopranos and related TV series focused upon mafia gangs and criminals ties in tightly with the Scorpio hotspot. In 2013 TV Guide ranked the Sopranos in the Top 10 list of The 60 Greatest Dramas of All Time.[6]

Did the Scorpio hotspot (2007-12) within the Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow (2005-15) demonstrate a heightened manifestation of Scorpio archetypes?  The GFC is probably the most potent example of Scorpio in this time frame but the Fukushima nuclear accident is a close second.  Revolution and general instability mainly in the Middle East has also demonstrated a strong Scorpio focus.  The killing of Osama Bin Laden and all other listed items from 2006 strongly suggest that Scorpio has recently been peaking in world affairs.  Even the massive loss of ice in the Arctic ultimately as a repercussion of pollution is a double Scorpio archetype – Scorpio rules both ice (fixed water) and pollution (the world’s waste).  From 1948 until 2002, the average decline of ice in the Artic was 3% per decade.  Right on target in 2007, the loss of Arctic ice significantly increased – far more than the decrease of ice at the Antarctic.  As a result, for the first time in recorded history, the Northwest Passage opened to ships without the need of icebreakers.[7]

The next Scorpio period of the same magnitude of the recent Scorpio hotspot is the Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow (2059-64-69) – something to warn your grandchildren about.  We are now at the very beginning of the Cancer quasi micro-age decan (2012-2017) and so the emphasis has shifted to Cancer – but we can still expect some significant remnant Scorpio developments until 2015 – especially aligned to the ten months of the Scorpio nano-age decan and overflow in the last part of 2014 and early 2015 (probably indicating the next significant but temporary downturn of the stock market). Under Cancer, the general public becomes even more fickle, and Capricorn leaders around the world are being undermined, one way or another.  Many heads will roll (politically) but the USA is on course for its first female president.  Long term plans (such as reigning in pollution to prevent destructive climate change) are temporarily against the collective desires of the Cancer general public who generally cannot see beyond immediate emotional issues and their wallet.  Don’t worry, the Aquarius quasi-micro-age decan (2017-22) will bring back some forward planning, innovative developments but also some heightened revolutionary fervor (for better or worse).  The period 2017 to 2022 will be the first solid experience of Aquarius for surviving Baby Boomers.

Cancer – the New Paradigm for the World

Most people who make their way to this blog read “SCORPIO – the Sign of the Times” that I wrote in 2006.  We are currently in the process of exiting from this heightened Scorpio ‘hotspot’ that affects the world from 2005 until 2015, but with the upper half of the bell-curve located 2007 to 2011/12.  This Scorpio hotspot is currently being replaced by the sign Cancer, and Cancer will be the paradigm of note for the next five years (2012-17) but it has a wider bandwidth than the normal five years.  This Cancer period will be stronger than the effects of most five years quasi-micro age decans but it will not be a hotspot like the previous Scorpio quasi nano-age that resonated with the large Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970-2148)

For those new to this blog, a micro-age is approximately 15 years long and is one-twelfth of a sub-age (approx. 178 years).  Each age of approximately 2,150 years has twelve sub-ages.  These small micro-ages can be divided into three equal parts using traditional astrological techniques.  One third of a micro-age is a micro-age decan.  Associated with all ages and their sub-periods, including micro-ages, are quasi periods comprising the last half of the current period in question with the first half of the next period.  This explanation of a quasi-period in relation to the astrological ages can suffice at this point, and those readers wanting to delve into the subject can purchase my book “THE DAWNING – Shedding new Light on the Astrological Ages”.

If each sign has three decans, one of which is the same as the parent sign, then sometimes the parent sign and sub-period will be the same.  This is the case with the current Cancer quasi-micro age decan.   The Cancer quasi-age decan (2012-17) is derived from the Cancer micro-age decan (2010-15) and is the last decan of the Cancer micro-age (2000-15).  Due to the overflow effect, as the influence of all periods rolls over the following period similar to a wave, the full extent of Cancer is the Cancer micro-age and overflow (2000 – 2015 – 2029).  We can easily verify the arrival of this 29 year period – in 2001, the 9/11 attack upon the USA brought to the forefront of world affairs the situation in the Muslim world.  The key zodiacal sign associated with Islam is Cancer.  This Cancer period has increased the status of Islam in the world for better or worse.  In response to this attack, the USA and its close allies attacked Afghanistan and then perversely attacked Iraq – two nations in the Muslim heartlands.  The Afghanistan war has now become the longest war of all times for the USA.  The other key region in the world that has strong Cancer associations is China. Though we cannot pinpoint China’s ascent to world stardom to the exact year 2000, it has certainly exhibited its daunting lurch forward in economic development over the last ten years.

The arrival of Cancer is noticeable, but the whole period under the rulership of Cancer is not homogeneous – it is more like a giant bell-curve.  In 2007  is the beginning of the Cancer quasi-micro-age (covering the period 2007 to 2022) indicating this central area of heightened Cancer activity.  Again we can clearly see the arrival of this increased Cancer influence with the GFC that commenced with the sub-prime crisis of 2007.  In 2007 it became obvious to traders that a huge swath of derivatives based on real estate mortgages were worth far less than their market value. Homes and consequently real estate is a strong Cancer archetype.  The collapse of this sub-prime market led to the collapse of a number of banks and resulted in the GFC which was basically aligned to the Scorpio quasi-micro age decan (2001-12) that comprises one of the decans of Cancer.

Not only did the rising intensity of Cancer precipitate the sub-prime mortgage crisis, it increased the temperature in the Muslim world, and by 2011 a number of governments of Islamic nations fell to protestors or commenced civil wars or periods of ongoing dissent. The temperature increased in 2012 with the arrival of the five year Cancer quasi-age decan (2012-17) – the upper echelon for Cancer in its assigned 29 year period.  We can expect further unsettled conditions in the Middle East and we can expect China to soon peak – which does not insinuate it is ready to ‘fall’ – this is merely the dreams of American Republicans nostalgic about America being the only superpower of note in the world.

Cancer is not limited to Islam and China.  Cancer, the ruler of homes, always witnesses mass migrations of people looking for a new home and whom we sometimes call refugees – but governments and right-wing politicians and their supporters generally prefer the term illegal immigrants.  This practice by human beings over the last tens of thousands of years (hundreds of thousands of years?) to move to locations where conditions are better has now been made basically illegal.  In response to mass migrations, governments often resort to another archetype associated with Cancer and build a defensive wall (in medieval times a fortress with moat).  The USA is constructing and upgrading its border with Mexico as is Israel building massive concrete walls against Palestinians.  Under Cancer we can expect the number of refugees and ‘illegal immigrants’ to increase exponentially, and extreme approaches to ‘defend our borders’ – perhaps we should buy shares in company’s specializing in fortifications?

Another aspect of Cancer is that it is opposite the sign of Capricorn.  Capricorn represents the status of leaders and those with rank, especially with a conservative approach, plus it also rules the long-term view and long-term plans.  Both these are under threat under the current Cancer period.  The leaders of countries are falling, either democratically voted out by their citizens incensed at their handling of the GFC or falling to insurrection such as we have already witnessed in the Middle East.  In place of Capricorn long-term policy and wise decisions the world will be ruled by changeable public opinion for a number of years, as the public is ruled by Cancer.  I thought the Cancer world today was a threat to the re-election of President Obama as public opinion can swing wildly under Cancer, but in the end he was probably saved by opposing Republicans in the Capricorn camp.  Conservative leaders are on the nose to the general public and I don’t think the general public took kindly to Romney stating that the Democratic 47% of the populace were parasites on the system.

Unfortunately this lack of Capricorn long term view has derailed the international effort to curtail climate change.  At a time when leadership is required, the major carbon producing nations have their heads in the sand and are bickering about their relative carbon emissions.

Countries with Capricorn predominantly in their respective astrological signatures can expect additional turmoil.  Two countries that are unambiguously in this camp are the USA and India.  The USA was first settled by Europeans under the highpoint of the Capricorn sub-age and overflow (1433 – 1612 – 1791) – the first sub-age in the Age of Aquarius.  The USA’s conservative credentials are strong relative to the other First World nations basically due to a large fundamentalist Christian faction derived from the austere and conservative Puritans and religious folk who fled from Europe to escape religious persecution.  The first Cancer micro-age the colonists encountered was from 1687 to 1702 with its overflow period extending to 1716.  For example in 1688 the first group to denounce slavery occurred in Pennsylvania precipitating the split in American values leading ultimately to the much later American Civil War.  Another similar public statement was made by a Boston judge in 1698. In 1689 two insurrections occurred, one in Boston and the other in New York based on divided loyalties between Jacobites and supporters of the new English king, William of Orange. In 1692 twenty `witches’ were executed in Salem. In 1699 a yellow fever epidemic killed many people.

The next Cancer micro-age and overflow was (1836-1851-1866) which naturally includes the American Civil War (1861 – 65) at the end of the Cancer micro-age overflow period (1851-1866).  If this war was replicated in the current Cancer micro-age and overflow, it would occur from 2023 to 2028.  While I am not suggesting that there will be another American Civil War in the current elongated Cancer period, it does suggest that the USA will pass through a very stressful time in the next two decades.  It turns out that the American Civil war coincided with a Gemini micro-age decan (1861 – 1866).  It is therefore possible that the American psyche has aligned itself strongly to the Sagittarius sub-age and overflow (1612-1791-1970) and therefore any Gemini period may be difficult as Gemini is opposite to Sagittarius.  The Gemini micro-age (2015-29) is not just another Gemini period.  The year 2029 marks the end of the Gemini sub-age decan (1970 – 2029) and the beginning of the powerful Gemini sub-age decan overflow (2029-2089) with 2029 the very highpoint of Gemini.  So while I don’t expect another American Civil War, I do expect great tensions and stresses in the American psyche at this juncture.  This will possibly be the culmination of the stress fracture between progressives versus the fundamentalists and conservatives that appeared in the 1970s with the arrival of the Gemini sub-age decan.  Alternatively it could be a major opposition with China or the Muslim world.

India is showing no signs to date of succumbing to the Cancer micro-age and overflow.  Any strategic change may relate to its Capricorn cast system that remains a strongly entrenched social practise even if illegal.  Greater India includes Pakistan and so they may use their nuclear arsenals against each other, but unless this occurs by 2015, it is more likely to be a conventional disagreement.

There is a lot more to Cancer than refugees, American dissent, fall of leaders, lack of long term planning, China, India and Muslim countries.  My research on historical events over the last two centuries indicates a number of developments that congregate around the sign Cancer.  These include everything to do with ships, canals, food (including eating disorders such as bulimia, binge eating and food intolerance), mental health, Mexico, the Moon, mines, New Zealand, photography, protectionism, Russia, Scandinavia, temperance, water (including tsunamis and floods), women and the Working Class. I am not suggesting that this list is exhaustive as I expect great developments towards curing the disease cancer during the current Cancer period, which is already happening.

The Aquarian age did not begin in the 1960′s or ’70s (Revised)

The most commonly stated urban myth about the Aquarian age is that it commenced in the 1960s or ’70s. Blogs from one end of the world to the other repeatedly discuss the arrival of the Aquarian age in those rebellious and drug-fuelled times.  Just because the musical Hair commenced proclaiming in the 1960s that ‘this is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius…’ does not make it so. If all the people in the world jumped up and down in unison declaring this is the beginning of the Age of Aquarius, Aquarius could not care less, even if everyone sang it in key!

The behind-the-scenes understanding of the Aquarian age, and astrological ages in general, requires some knowledge of astronomy and astrology.  However, even in the astrological world, very few astrologers research the subject, while most of the other astrologers have little more knowledge on the astrological ages than the general public. The most common statement on the subject, from those few research astrologers that examine the ages, is that the previous age, the Age of Pisces, arrived with the birth of Jesus Christ. Pisces is the sign of two fish.  Since early times Christians preferred the fish symbol for Christianity, so astrologers behave like Homer Simpson and say d’oh – ‘Jesus must have started the Pisces age’.

However if Jesus commenced the Pisces age, the earliest the Aquarian age can arrive is around 2150. Why? Because the cycle of ages due to precession of the equinoxes takes approximately 26,000 years to make one revolution. In the approx. 26,000 years cycle each age appears for approximately 2150 years each. Therefore if the Pisces age commenced with Jesus then the Aquarian age cannot commence before approx. 2150. Secondly, many astrologers believe that due to the haphazard sizes of the zodiacal constellation, the Pisces age must be closer to 2600 years in length as the constellation of Pisces is a large constellation on the ecliptic, and takes up more than 30 degrees – the average or standard size assigned to each zodiacal constellation. Based on this approach, many
astrologers believe the Aquarian age will not arrive until around the year 2600 – almost six centuries into the future.

The problem with the Aquarian age arriving in the middle of the 22nd or much later at the beginning of the 27^th centuries is how to explain all the Aquarian
developments in the world today. Such Aquarian developments include electricity, computers, flight, space travel and democracy. All these have strong archetypal affinity to Aquarius and no relationship to Pisces.  What do these have to do with the Pisces age?

To get around this awkward question the solution is easy – just state that we are approaching the cusp of the Pisces and Aquarian ages, and at the cusp there is a blurring of the two influences. Unfortunately no experienced astrologer to my knowledge has ever experienced cusps. Cusps are an urban myth popular with those members of the general public with a little knowledge of astrology and with novice astrologers who do not know any better. In over three decades of studying astrology, I have never encountered a factual explanation of cusps that justify their existence nor heard from any experienced astrologer that cusps have any validity.

The common approach to the astrological ages is a good demonstration of irrationality at work. When no justification for the arrival of the Aquarian age before 2150 can be supplied, astrologers have invented a solution that no one has proved or can substantiate. In past times this is called ‘building your house on sand rather than rock’. The house is going to fall down if built upon the sand. Cusps are made of sand.

What else is sand here? Something very simple and totally overlooked. There is no doubt that Christianity has a relationship with Pisces. Pisces shares the fish symbol with Christianity and Pisces is also associated with mysticism and mystical religions, and religions based on salvation. But the BIG question is, why
should the Pisces age begin with the arrival of the avatar of Western culture?  Who said that ages must begin with a famous person? What about Buddha or
Zoroaster, why could not the Pisces age be already in place when Buddha appeared around six centuries earlier?

The whole mess of an Aquarian age not arriving before 2150 or much later is dependent on the unsubstantiated assumption that Jesus began the Pisces age. When I have confronted some astrologers about this anomaly their eyes turn blank and their aura recedes because astrologers are not accustomed to think about the ages in general and the Aquarian age in particular. Astrologers are deep thinkers, but not when it comes to the ages. The study of the astrological ages is one area in astrology where astrologers can dream up all manner of unsubstantiated nonsense and pretend it is true. If this is how astrologers behave, no wonder the urban myths on the Aquarian age are in lala land.

If the Aquarian age arrived, say at 1970, then the Pisces age should have arrived at around 181 BC (1970 AD – 2150 = 181 BC). What happened around 181 BC to indicate a major historical shift in gears? Nothing! There is no reason to believe that the Pisces age arrived around 181 BC. However this does not mean that 181 BC was not in the Pisces age.

One of the main reasons that astrologers, and many members of the general public, have a problem aligning astrological ages with history is that, by and large,
astrologers and the general public are not historians.  For the historical-challenged (i.e. most people), the revolutionary fervent around the 1960s and 70s was strongly evident.  Yes there were bohemians well before this time, and beatniks appeared in the 1950s but the intensity of youthful revolutionary passion in the 60s and 70s was awesome in comparison.  However the historical problem with a new age arriving in the 60s and 70s is that the revolutionary fervent occurred in a culture in progress that has been developing for many centuries.

Historians claim that the modern world is the result of many significant changes that have their seed around the 15^th century – often called the Early
Modern Period. Even Wikipedia states that:

modernity has been associated with cultural and intellectual movements of 1436—1789 and extending to the 1970s or later

Some commentators state that the world has recently entered the era of postmodernism, and some claim that we are now in the period of post-postmodernism.  The common denominator of Early Modern, modern, postmodernism and even post-postmodernism is that these are all aspects of modernity.  The modern world commenced unfolding in the 15^th century.  Along the way, many significant and major developments have occurred within the unfolding of the modern world, but they are all one continuum.  Most people are unaware of the significant historical events that occurred and began
in the 15^th century.

The upshot of all this is that from a simplistic and obvious point of view the Age of Aquarius has not only arrived – it arrived in the 15^th century!  Another reason why astrologers are unaware of this reality (apart from a lack of historical perspective) is that for over the last 2100 years, the calibration technique adopted by astrologers to determine the astrological ages has been incorrect.  Many of the techniques of the ancients have been found faulty, and from the 15^th
century onwards, scientists and academics have turned upside down ancient science and replaced ancient approximations or incorrect approaches with
approaches based on evidence and logic (empiricism). Until recently, the  calibration technique adopted by the ancients to measure the arrival of the
astrological ages such as the Age of Aquarius has not been closely examined.

Though the Aquarian age did not arrive in the 1960s and 70s, an important point within the Aquarian age did occur in 1970.  Each age contains 12 sub-ages of around 179 years.  In 1970, the Scorpio sub-age came to its end and simultaneously achieved its highest power. Both Aquarius and Scorpio are associated with revolution – so at a Scorpio high point around the 1970s, revolution will be very powerful.

SCORPIO – the Sign of the Times …. Revisited Part 3 – Taxes & Debt

Taxes and debt are also relevant issues for our current Scorpio hotspot.  The GFC that appeared in full force by 2008 coincided with the arrival of the current Scorpio hotspot.  Scorpio is a “contracting” sign, and as a general rule, periods associated with Scorpio will see the equivalent of the Biblical seven years of emaciated cows.  The GFC achieved this admirably well.  However as the Scorpio tempo increased from 2010 onwards, some additional serious financial calamities have appeared.  By early 2010 a number of Eurozone countries were experiencing debt problems including Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and Belgium.  Greece had to be bailed out in 2010, and later in the year Ireland found itself in the same situation with Portugal falling in line in early 2011. More countries with a debt crisis can be expected.

However the fringe European countries suffering debt crises pale to insignificance at the prospect of the USA going virtually bankrupt.  This situation developed primarily due to the mainly conservative US government in the first decade in the 21^st century lowering taxes at the same time as engaging in new and expensive wars and increasing government expenditure.  It is one of the ongoing political ironies that the conservatives (Republicans) in the USA shout the loudest to reduce government expenditure and reduce taxes but whom when in office increase government debt the most.  The American voting public seems unable to understand this nebulous aspect of their political culture. This is unlikely to change much as the prime sign for the USA is Pisces, and clarity is nearly always absent when Pisces is strong.

Laurence Kotlikoff in February 2011 states that the current state of finances in the USA is worse than Greece when it had to be bailed out in 2010 by the European Union.  One of the reasons the USA is in such a parlous situation is that it has adopted ENRON styled accounting and for several decades has kept future social security liabilities “off the books”.  To correct this situation, the US government needs to raise all federal taxes by two-thirds the current levels.[i]  Not only are the rich in the USA currently paying reduced taxes, the tax take from corporations in the USA has plummeted in recent decades.  By 2002 and 2003 it was reported that US companies were paying their lowest proportion of taxes since the Second World War.  In the 1950s, corporations paid over 25% of all taxers collected in the US, which dropped to 20% in the 1960s. By the second half of the 1990s it dropped further to 11% and by 2002/3 corporate taxes provided a mere 6% of the US tax base. Apart from corporate tax reductions provided by the US government, major US corporations take undue advantage of various tax reduction schemes to minimise their taxes.  This includes paying massive bonuses to their leaders and employees, much of which they claim as a tax deduction – but not shown as expenses in their financial accounts to their shareholders.[ii] 

The prime zodiacal sign associated with both the USA and corporations is Pisces, which may explain why the USA deifies corporations and capitalism – and thus honouring them with paying far lower taxes as the years roll by.  The Roman senators in the Roman Republic were equally short-sighted in their approach to tax.  In the 2^nd century BC they outlawed taxes.  This is understandable as the Roman senators represented the same rich constituency as the American Republican Party, and people that have financially benefitted from society due to their enterprise or ingenuity, seem to dislike paying taxes to the same society they benefit from.  This folly by the Roman Senators resulted in an ongoing lack of funds for government expenditure, especially for their armies.  As a consequence, the Roman generals had to find other financial means to pay their soldiers, either from the booty of war or other means.  This slowly tied the loyalty of the soldiers to their generals rather than the Roman state.  It was only a little more than a century after this taxation change by the Roman senators that generals with their armies usurped the Roman Republic and moved to the dictatorial end of the political spectrum. 

What will be the short, medium and long-term trend in the USA if corporate taxes are kept significantly below their real taxation responsibilities and the rich continue to pay minimal income taxes?  It will not take long to discover.  The next Cancer micro-age overflow (2015 – 2029) will bring out all of the dirty washing in the USA.  Previous Cancer micro-age overflows experienced in America does not paint a pleasant picture.

The worse countries in the world for debt are basically the western nations of Europe, North America, Australia plus Japan.[iii]  The richest countries in the world are accumulating the greatest debt indicating a significant fault line. From a rational point of view, the poorest countries should have the greatest debt in an attempt to try and catch up with the developed nations.  Ultimately debt means bringing forward expenditure than normally would have to wait.  Bringing forward expenditure also means bringing forward the associated pollution.  The mainly western-developed nations are behaving like the old medieval aristocracy, demanding a far higher material quality of life and lording over their serfs (Third World countries) – but throwing them some crumbs from time to time.  We live in the delusion of a progressively democratising world, but in reality, democratic countries do not behave as equals on the world stage.

As an example of the relationship of (Scorpio) debt to economic well-being, there were only two years in recent history when the US household debt was the same as the GDP – in 1929 and 2007.  The first coincided with the Great Depression, and the second with the GFC.  In response, Columbia professor David Beim stated that the economic problem may be blamed on the banks and financial institutions, but the real culprit is the general public.  People are living beyond their means and are borrowing far too much money to support their dreams.[iv]

However it is the banks and financial institutions that are getting the bulk of the bad press.  From the astrological perspective this is understandable as banks are ruled by Taurus, and Taurus is opposite Scorpio.  In a Scorpio period Taurus banks will be in 7^th house mode.  They will either be in attack mode or under attack.  With some significant bank failures and problems around the world and the perception banks resorted to exotic financial instruments that caused the banking collapse associated with the GFC, the status of banks have plummeted in the last few years.  This is entirely in accord with the current Scorpio hotspot. 

As of May 2011 many smaller banks continue to fail each month in the USA.[v]  It is instructive that the cause of bank failures for the most part relate to the massive drop in real estate prices associated with questionable loans linked to questionable collateralized debt financial instruments.  Everything to do with real estate is associated with Cancer, and it must be remembered that the current Scorpio hotspot is the Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow (2005–15) within the Cancer micro-age (2000-15).  Scorpio debt is the problem sitting within the context of the Cancer real estate market shake-down.

The result of over-borrowing is default and bankruptcy for individuals, businesses, banks and countries.  The fact that a number of European nations plus the USA are currently experiencing the downside problem associated with debt is due to the previous over-reliance upon excessive debt.  Debt is one of the scourges of the modern world, and may be one of the Four Horseman of the Modern Apocalypse.  If the world was run by a world government that acted rationally, permanent steps would be put in place to counter debt in the same way steps have been put in place in many nations to limit other scourges such as cigarette smoking and AIDS. This is not the case so whatever patchwork approach is taken by governments to offset mounting debt is unlikely to prove effective in the short term at least.  There remains four more years until 2015 when excessive debt will cause further problems.

A number of conservative governments and other governments that have fallen foul of their debt have significantly changed the ratio of their taxation to spending levels.  For conservative governments they mainly try and keep taxes low and reduce services.  For other debt-ridden countries, they not only reduce services but must increase taxes.  Taxes will be in the march in a Scorpio period.  This is the source of social unrest in some countries like Greece and Spain where the populace are venting their displeasure at their falling collective wealth.  Taurean wealth will always be in detriment in a Scorpio period.

The banking and GFC are further convincing evidence that the world is currently under the influence of Scorpio – the sign of our times.  Taxes will continue to be an issue and the rich plus banks will be aggressive in trying to defend their turf. This is a time of seven-emaciated-cows so temporarily at least, the world must tighten its belt, reduce its consumption, pay more taxes and therefore exist with less money and wealth – all the hallmarks of Scorpio.

SCORPIO – the Sign of the Times …. Revisited Part 2 – Nuclear Issues

In my 2006 article:  SCORPIO – the Sign of the Times  published in the Astrological Monthly Review (Vol. 68, No. 11, November 2006, pgs 27-31) I stated:

“The world has arrived at another hotspot which stretches from 2005 to 2015 but the most potent time is between 2010 and 2015.  Already some early indicators of Scorpio’s increased presence is making itself felt.  One of the most noticeable aspects is a new concerted push to expand nuclear energy production.  Australia, the major supplier of uranium in the world, is moving towards increasing the number of mines and production and possibly even introducing nuclear reactors into Australia.  Other nuclear developments are North Korea’s claim in 2005 that it had developed a nuclear bomb and the belief in 2006 that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon.  If the last Scorpio hot spot is any guide, some nuclear calamity due to aggression or accident may be around the corner, especially between 2010 and 2015.”

The key nuclear issue (to date) associated with the current Scorpio hotspot is the Japanese disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant following the tsunami in March 2011.  Until this accident, the current Scorpio hotspot had seen a sharp revival of interest in building more nuclear reactors around the world to a level not seen for decades (since the previous Scorpio hotspot).  Currently 60 nuclear plants are under construction – with the majority in Asia and many existing plants are being upgraded.  The plants in operation in 2009 provided 15% of the world’s electricity. 155 nuclear reactors are in the planning stage with another 320 proposed.[1]  As one adverse aspect of this new push towards nuclear energy, the German government suffered some serious political humiliation early in 2011, after the Japanese tsunami, due to its strong promotion of nuclear power prior to the Japanese accident. Japan naturally has put on hold plans to expand its nuclear energy. In my 2006 article I stated that the current Scorpio hotspot would see

“…. a new concerted push to expand nuclear energy production”.

The Fukushima nuclear disaster may not be the only “accident” in this period.  Apart from some other similar nuclear accident, there is also the possibility of a dirty bomb or increased threats to use nuclear weapons by rogue states.  We are not out of the woods yet.  With the increased fervour to build many more nuclear reactors, there will be the increased chance in the future that further accidents will occur for the same reason that no matter how safe new jet passenger airlines are constructed, some will still crash!  One key time for future nuclear accidents will be the next Scorpio hotspot due in 2059 to 2069 with the most potent time 2064 to 2067.

Of course, the desire to produce electricity by nuclear power is driven by the needs of an energy hungry world trying to cut its addiction to carbon-based power stations and their attendant pollution.  The real solution, supported by the sign, Scorpio – the sign of our times, is that the world’s population needs to drastically decrease, people need to consume far less and there should be a greater reliance upon sustainable power sources. The vested commercial interests, generally represented by the conservative political parties and therefore supported by an enormous number of the general public around the world, believe that the sustainable approach to ecology will have a disastrous effects upon the capitalistic world economy.

The sustainable ecological approach will be fiercely resisted until people are dropping due to the adverse effects of pollution.  And even at this point there is no guarantee that the moneyed class and supporting political apparatus will effectively respond when people start dying from pollution.  China is giving us a preview of this now.  By 2009, it was estimated that air and water pollution was prematurely killing 2 million people a year in the world, with at least 656,000 of these in China and over 500,000 in India.[2]  In 2007 China suppressed the release of a report on this problem for fear on inciting social unrest.[3]  This is the coming reality for much of the world. It reminds me of some graffiti I use to observe in Sydney in the last Scorpio hotspot (1960s-70s)

“mutate now, avoid the rush”.

The strong Scorpio flavour at our part in the Aquarian age suggest that the world will continue on down its current path until it goes past the point of no return, and then try and rectify the situation when most of the calamity has occurred or the damage is mainly irreversible.  This dire forecast however is offset by another astrological reality that will commence to unfold in the world at an increased level from around 2029 onwards.  From 2029 onwards, the astrological energy shifts to ‘anti-expansion’ due to a Gemini sub-age decan overflow (2029 – 2089).

Therefore there will be two opposing forces in the world for most of the 21^st century.  On the one-hand, the expansionary overflow from the Sagittarius sub-age decan and overflow (1612–1791–1970), that is linked to the Industrial Revolution and world-wide population explosion, will meet its opposite sign, Gemini at its peak power from 2029 onwards. In association with the frugal and contracting archetypal nature of the Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970-2148), the world should see the brakes consistently applied beginning 2029. The tensions between these expansionary and contracting archetypal energies will define most of the rest of this century.  There are early precursors to this evolving situation now (see When Will the World Slow Down? )

One of the reasons why the world is so ineffective in taking a stance against the coming peril of climate change due to extreme pollution is that the first third of the Aquarian age is ruled by the Libran age-decan (1433 – 2148), with Libra building in tempo as it approaches its highpoint in 2148 whereupon it should reign triumphant.  Libra promotes ease and comfort – including all the modern labour-saving conveniences that are available since the Industrial Revolution.  Libra is also anti-war but lacks will and decisiveness.  So it is easier to feed the world cheap consumer goods (often from the heavily polluted factories) rather than promote frugality, anti-consumption and sustainability.  This wishy washy approach to climate change will seriously “bite” the world in the coming decades.

So while the world remains in the current Scorpio hotspot until 2015, and especially strong until 2012, we must expect the strong possibility that either another nuclear incident will occur, or that the medium-term effect of the Fukushima nuclear plant incident will reverberate around the world truncating the rising demand for nuclear power.  This may be wishful thinking as commercial interests do not like being blocked from securing future profits.

In Part 1 of this series I concentrated upon tyrants and revolution.  When I commenced writing this series I was aware that ‘assassination and death’ (included in the list of above Scorpio archetypes) seemed under represented.  However the recent assassination of Osama bin Laden by American forces in Pakistan has corrected this situation. This event has multiple Scorpio archetypes attached to it – terrorism, revolutionary leader, assassination, spy networks (CIA and the Pakistan intelligence service) and finally an undercover operation resulting in bin Laden’s death.  Assassinations and death will be explored later in this series.  The next blog in this series will be part 3 on the Scorpio activities of taxes and debt – which has also recently risen significantly in stature as the US faces its many trillions of burgeoning debt.

Part 1 –Revolution and Tyrants

Five years ago my article SCORPIO – the Sign of the Times was published in the Astrological Monthly Review (Vol. 68, No. 11, November 2006, pgs 27-31). Within the Aquarian age, the most relevant aspect that relates to the 21^st century is Scorpio.  This is because there are twelve sub-ages in each age, and the Scorpio sub-age existed from 1791 until 1970.  Due to the fact that the greatest manifestation of influence for any age or sub-period is in the immediate following period, the peak potential for Scorpio is actually 1970 to 2148.  There are smaller sub periods in the astrological ages than sub-ages.  Each sub-age has twelve micro-ages of approximately 15 years each, with each micro-age consisting of three decans of approximately five years each The Scorpio micro-age decan ran from 2005 until 2010, with its overflow period 2010 to 2015 its most potent time – especially 2010 to 2012.  The whole period 2005 to 2015 is a Scorpio hotspot as this little Scorpio micro-age decan resonates with the momentum of the Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970 – 2148)

In the article published in 2006 I identified the prime concepts associated with Scorpio:

• Revolution and general instability
• tyrants with their cruelty
• terrorists
• spiritual regeneration
• death, assassinations and murder
• waste products from any process, which naturally includes sewage and pollution
• atomic energy and bombs
• almost everything associated with sex
• taxes and debt (including credit cards)
• underground criminal organisations
• spy networks
• minimalism

Revolution and General Instability

Recent evidence, especially since about 2007, strongly supports the existence of this Scorpio hotspot.  Let’s start with revolution and general instability.  The flare-up of disenchanted citizens in many Middle Eastern countries since early 2011 is widespread and includes: Tunisia, Libya, Algeria, Jordan, Mauritania, Sudan, Oman, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Djibouti, Morocco, Iraq, Somalia, Bahrain, Iran and Kuwait.  The unrest commenced in Tunisia in December 2010 and two established leaders have already been overthrown – in Tunisia and Egypt. In response a number of these countries have enacted democratic reforms, but some have created greater repression of their political opponents or citizens.[1]

From an astrological perspective, it is interesting that the current round of revolutionary fervour is basically located in Middle Eastern Muslim nations, while the similar revolutionary fervour of the 1960s and 70s was mainly associated with Western nations.  The main exception to this was Iran.  The current Middle Eastern instability is occurring in the Cancer micro-age (2000 – 2015).  Cancer is the main sign associated with Islam, and also has long antecedents in the Middle East (Cancer is always associated with the middle of anything, including particularly the stomach). Even the recent riots (since 2005) in French cities were by disaffected Muslim youths.  This is interesting from the point that the signs Cancer and Scorpio have strong antecedents in France, and the Muslim urban guerrillas seems to be mainly a French phenomenon rather than a European or western phenomenon.

The current revolutionary unrest may be a small preview of what is to come.  The Cancer micro-age overflow (2014 – 2029) is potentially the first of a number of highly revolutionary periods experienced in the world for around 7,000 years (see A Celebration 7,000 Years in the Making ).  The Cancer micro-age overflow is also the same time period as the Gemini micro-age which contains within it the revolutionary Aquarian micro-age decan and overflow (2015 – 2024) with the most potent time around 2020.  Will the Middle East explode?

The last time the world experienced a Scorpio micro-age decan and overflow within a Cancer micro-age was 1841 to 1851.  It was during this period that the first explosions of western working class people began against their mainly despotic and anti-democratic rulers.  At the forefront of this new revolutionary sensibility of the working class was the publication in 1848 of The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.  After 30 years of relative calm, major revolutions in 1848 provided Europe with a taste of things to come. Similar to exiting despotic rulers in the Middle East, the western monarchial governments severely repressed their citizens in the 18^th century. It took over 100 years, but by the end of the 20th century, most people in western countries existed in a democratic environment.  Freedom does not come easily!

The astrology of the astrological ages indicates that not all the world is unilaterally affected at the same time when a new age or sub-period arrives.  There is no doubt that when the Scorpio sub-age arrived in 1791, Europe was ready for its revolution, and over the course of the Scorpio sub-age (1791 – 1970), this definitely took place.  At the beginning of the sub-age, Europe was mainly ruled by monarchs.  A little after the end of the sub-age, Europe consists mainly of democratic nations.  This was a real revolution and probably the greatest revolution the world has ever experienced!  In the Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970 – 2148), the same kind of revolutionary energy that Europe experienced in the 19^th and 20^th centuries, will fan out to the rest of the world like the wake of a boat.  The fact that in the current Scorpio hotspot, the revolutionary zeal is mainly focused upon Middle Eastern Muslim nations, strongly suggests the new theatre of action over the next century or so.  From the macro-astrological perspective, the tyrannical, dictatorial and repressive regimes in the Middle East seem to have the edge over the demonstrators except in Tunisia, Egypt and perhaps Libya.

The citizens of the Middle East will not see the arrival of their democratic rights en mass in the next year or decade except in some lucky countries. However their quest for freedom may not take as long or be drawn out compared to what occurred in the West over the course of the 19^th and 20^th centuries.  The macro-astrological conditions for the rest of the 21^st centuries are extremely volatile and revolutionary – far more than the 19^th and 20^th centuries. Whichever Middle Eastern nations retain autocratic and monarchial control by 2074 will have to withstand the 60 years long Aquarian sub-age decan overflow (2074-2148).  Combining revolutionary Aquarius with the revolutionary Scorpio sub-age overflow (1970-2148) is going to create some very interesting political conditions in many areas of the world – heads will roll.

One major difficulty for these fledging Middle Eastern revolutionaries is the enormous amount of money their mainly despotic rulers have available to repress their subjects.  The West is pouring its financial resources into these nations in exchange for the economic heroin of the time – oil. The West also has its armaments industries assiduously arming these despots “for a profit”.  Therefore the fundamental difference between Europeans citizens fighting for the democratic rights over the last two centuries and Middle Eastern citizens is that their autocratic leaders are receiving enormous support from the western countries to maintain their autocratic authority.  This highlights one of those contradictions of the modern world.

In the current Aquarian age (really the Pisces-Aquarius age), the main sign is medieval Pisces, not democratic Aquarius. One Pisces delusion in the world today is that western democratic countries do the work of well-meaning democracies.  Just because a country is nominally democratic within its own borders, does not prevent it behaving abominably outside of its borders.  The role that western democratic nations have taken in the world is the role of the medieval lord of the manor demanding obeisance of its serfs (developing and Third World nations).  The west consumes the most, borrows the most, pollutes the most and enacts policies to maintain this position of privilege and power. It is in the best interests of western capitalists that Middle Eastern countries provide them with oil in exchange for providing massive financial support that enables Middle Eastern despots to keep their citizens subjugated.

The geo-political reality of the modern world is therefore unlikely to stand by while the suppliers of their next fix of oil get consumed by any revolutionary rabble.  Yes there will be some lip service towards nebulous democratic ideals – and in places like Libya it will be convenient as a payback time. Libya has long been a rogue state from the western perspective and therefore becomes the public relations scapegoat promoting the perspective that the western intervention is seen as the west fulfilling its democratic duty.   This takes the media focus way from other countries such as Bahrain where the Saudi’s in their tanks arrived to quell those pesky citizens having the temerity to demand their democratic rights – why don’t they obey their king like obedient subjects and keep those oil wells flowing?

Astrology is not biased towards good winning over evil.  While the Middle Eastern unrest is mainly a secular drive for freedom, all the other revolutionaries around the world are busy blowing up churches, mosques, temples and innocent people to further their extremist agendas.  They are also empowered by the current Scorpio hotspot.  So we have about four more years of concentrated freedom seeking revolutionaries and extremist terrorists creating turmoil.  The current Scorpio hotspot sits within the shadow of the Leo micro-age overflow (2000-2014) indicating, as a general rule, that the autocratic leaders have the (astrological) momentum compared to their revolutionary citizens.  This also applies to terrorists.  So while the Middle East revolutionaries may extract little major change in the current Scorpio hotspot, neither will the extremist terrorists.  This is all due to change by 2020 at the latest when a foretaste of the end of the 21^st century is experienced.

Tyrants

Tyrants have come out of the closet with the arrival of the current Scorpio hotspot– and top of the list is Colonel Gaddafi of Libya, but he is not alone in his obnoxiousness.  In real terms the first prize should go to Kim Jong-il of North Korea – shelling a South Korean inhabited island, launching provocative missiles, sinking a South Korean naval ship and always threatening to produce nuclear weapons. It is one of those ironies of the astrological ages and politics that the same sign Scorpio breeds revolutions and tyrants.  They both seem to appear relatively simultaneously.

Of course tyrants have only appeared since the rise of “civilization”. Examination of Colonel Gaddafi and Kim Jong-il is like being in a time machine as they are good examples of the common political reality over the last 5,000 years in most “civilized” nations. Most European countries as well as most countries over the last 5,000 regularly had leaders as obnoxious (and far more so) as Gaddafi and Kim Jong-il.  Take the Taliban and their persecutions in Afghanistan when they held power prior to 9/11.  They behaved exactly the same as the Roman Catholic Church in the Inquisition only a few centuries ago – except the Inquisition lasted a much longer time.

There are some interesting macro-astrological connections to these modern day tyrants.  First, Colonel Gaddafi – he came to power in 1969, one year before the peak of Scorpio from the Scorpio sub-age (1791 – 1970).  Gaddafi is therefore a child of Scorpio. Robert Mugabe of Rhodesia came to power in 1980, towards the end of the Scorpio micro-age overflow (1970 – 85) but was fully active in the opposition to the white-minority Rhodesian government and saw the end of the Scorpio sub-age in 1970 serving a jail sentence as a political prisoner from 1964 to 1974. Like Colonel Gaddafi, Mugabe is also a child of Scorpio.  The tyrannical Iranian government also appeared in the Scorpio micro-age overflow in 1979 making a strong Scorpio connection to the Iranian government.

At the top of the tyrannical league, the only one without a strong Scorpio connection is Kim Jong-il of North Korea.  He is the leader of a government that first came to power in 1948, which does have Scorpio as a strong background sign, but was formed when the Capricorn sub-age overflow (1940-55) was the dominant sign.  On the micro-age decan level 1948 sits smack in the middle of the Leo micro-age decan overflow (1945-50).  Capricorn combined with Leo are both leadership signs bereft of any democratic content.  In North Korea they have combined the harsh authoritarianism and frugality of Capricorn with the ego of Leo – the king of the jungle as their ‘magnificent’ leader taking them on to their glorious socialist future.  North Korea is currently benefiting from the Leo sub-age overflow (2000-14) when astrologically, the sun shines the brightest upon North Korea.  However Leo does not benefit Capricorn as it produces lack of financial resources and even bankruptcy.

The shifting emphasis to Cancer as the current Cancer micro-age (2000–15) reaches its highpoint in 2015 will create a strong impediment to Capricorn (Cancer is opposite Capricorn).  Cancer is also the 12^th house to Leo – with the 12^th house indicating endings, perils and self-undoing.  Therefore the most likely tyrant to fall is Kim Jong-il.  In a Wikileaks release in 2010 it was revealed that Chinese diplomats had suggested that North Korea should be taken over by South Korea and that China was getting tired of the childish antics of the North Koreans.[2]  North Korea’s days may be numbered. Between now and 2015, when Cancer achieves full strength, there is a small gear change for Cancer – around 2012.  It is possible around 2012 the situation may further develop or deteriorate, but it is from 2015 onwards that the real hurdle for North Korea appears.

Robert Mugabe’s age may save Zimbabwe – at 87 years he surely has a limited time ahead at the helm.  Mugabe came to power in 1980 placing this in the Capricorn micro-age (1975 – 80) as a key supporting sign.  Like Kim Jong-il, this also puts him and his followers on a collision path with the peak of the Cancer micro-age in 2015.  In the meantime he can cause more havoc.  The Iranian government commencing 1979 is much the same as for Mugabe. Interesting times ahead for Iran as Cancer grows in strength towards 2015.

It is only Colonel Gaddafi that is almost pure Scorpio.  The Leo micro-age (2000-15) places anything associated with Scorpio in the limelight and favours the ruler of their subjects.  The current Scorpio micro-age decan overflow (2010-15) normally would assist him and the looming rising influence of Cancer is usually not a problem for Scorpio.  Born in 1942 when Capricorn was at its peak strength may just put him intrinsically on a collision course with his population as the strength of Cancer rises – but this is speculative.  Gaddafi also has strong tribal support for his rule.  If the Libyan uprising is a drawn-out conflict, this would suit western powers, as they can demonstrate their altruism in bringing democracy to the Middle East as a smokescreen for the oil-fix commercial reality, while people needlessly die, and more repressive Middle Eastern nations continue on in their merry ways with the tacit support of western nations.

Revolution in the Middle East

The rather sudden and startling quest for greater freedom and democracy in a number of Middle Eastern countries in the last few months is part of a greater orchestration towards political and social evolution around the world that commenced with the French Revolution (in the late 18^th century) aligned with the arrival of the Scorpio subage (1791 – 1970), and continuing on in the Scorpio subage overflow (1970 – 2148) due to the overflow effect associated with all ages and their sub-periods. The Scorpio subage is the third subage of the Age of Aquarius (that commenced in 1443 AD – see figure 1), heralding in the modern world.

Most historians and historical reference books indicate that the Modern World commenced in the 15^th century – or, at a minimum, the 15^th century was an extremely exalted time in the history of human society.  Apart from a plethora of other supporting facts, the 15^th century was the first century that humans (i.e. Europeans at least) could comprehend the whole world for the first time due to the maritime exploits of its sailors circumnavigating the world. The arrival of ages is marked by highly significant events!

The arrival of the third subage within the Aquarian age, the Scorpio subage in 1791 basically demarks the end of the Early Modern Period (according to many historians at around 1800) and the beginning of the Modern Period.  Within the Scorpio subage (1791 – 1970), the most significant large scale political revolution that has ever been experienced in the world, took place.  At the beginning of the Scorpio subage most countries in the world were ruled by monarchs or local aristocracy (the USA was the black sheep of the time being already a rudimentary democracy).  By the end of the Scorpio subage in 1970 most of these monarchs had been overthrown and replaced with democratic governments, communism or military juntas.  Only in some less politically developed regions, particularly in the Middle East, did the old monarchial way of life continued – mainly propped up in the 20^th century by Western and European nations to ensure a ready supply of fossil fuels.

The arrival of a new astrological period such as an age or subage does not affect the world uniformly.  The arrival of a new period is like the bow of the boat – surging into previously uncharted waters and leaving its ever expanding wake as evidence of its passage.  This wake then slowly affects all other regions of the world.  The wake from any age or sub-period of an age is even larger after the end of its own period (as represented in figure 1).  The primary focus of the initial Scorpio surge mainly affected western nations (including all of the Americas), but by its close in 1970, over half the world was deeply affected by its wake including an independent and democratic India on the one hand, and a communistic China on the other – but bereft of its former ruling class or aristocracy.

The transference from the Scorpio subage to Libra subage in 1970 actually marks an increase in tempo for Scorpio (due to its ever widening wake).  Libra has arrived, but it is the new kid on the block, and the wake from its bow wave has relatively little impact in the world in comparison to Scorpio.  Until near the end of the Libra subage in 2148, Scorpio is the dominant sign in the world (at the subage level).  The transition between the Scorpio subage and Scorpio subage overflow was marked by the revolutionary sentiment expressed in the late 1960s and early 70s resulting in the almost choreographed student and youth demonstration and riots throughout much of the western world. Other spectacular icons of this period are the hippy movement that sprang out of San Francisco, the music revolution first associated with the Beatles, the Woodstock festival in New York, the anti-war movement against the Viet Nam war, the French student uprising that nearly toppled the government and feminism at full bore and armed with the newly invented oral contraceptive (associated with sex – another Scorpio archetype).

It must be remembered (or recognized by the younger generations) that western society in the 1950s was extremely conservative, mono-cultural, with women knowing their place in society and much stronger fascist elements compared to western society of 2011. The arrival of the 60s and early 70s baby boomers with their long hair, drugs and free love temporarily created the normal fracas when any establishment or society meets a new evolutionary sociological phenomenon.  This is why students peacefully protesting the Viet Nam war were gunned down and killed in the USA, restrictive drug laws savagely enforced to persecute the new social movement and contentious objectors to compulsory military serviced were sent to jail. By and large the formerly stodgy and arch-conservative west has moved on to a certain degree since those heady days of the 60s and 70s. The formerly frowned upon music of the 60s and 70s now appears regularly in TV commercials, men can have hair whatever length they like but, except for some isolated pockets of enlightened thinking, the west maintains a witch hunt against recreational drug users, treats homosexuals as second class citizens and has not given full equality to women. The west is in the ongoing and long term process of assimilating the new cultural paradigm that appeared in the 60s and 70s and it will probably take another 150 or so years before some reasonable progress is made.

With the arrival of the Scorpio subage overflow in 1970, the bow wave of the Scorpio juggernaut continues to spread its influence.  However if you think that the revolutionary spirit has been a little subdued for the last few decades then you are quite right.  This is because subages have smaller periods within them called micro-ages.  Micro-ages are almost 15 years in duration (plus another 15 years overflow) and until very recently, the micro-ages encountered at the beginning of the Scorpio subage overflow have been conservative micro-ages (see figure 2).

The conservative (and stable) micro-ages belong to the Earth and Fire signs – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The conservative Virgo micro-age was in place from 1970 to 1985, followed by the conservative Leo micro-age (1985 – 2000) with both periods promoting stability over change but also enforcing the status quo as much as possible. It is only with the current Cancer micro-age (2000 – 2015) that we begin returning to the progressive but destabilizing signs.

Not only is the world returning to progressive micro-ages, this process is still accelerating.  The historical effects from any period associated with the astrological ages are always relatively sluggish to appear in a kind of delayed effect.  So while the current Cancer micro-age rules from 2000 to 2015, it is not until its overflow period (2015 – 2029) that it can fully express its Cancerian intentions. However a significant shift in gears appeared at its halfway point of Cancer micro-age in 2007 in its climb up Mount Cancer – and the current revolutionary fervor in the Middle East is part of this Cancer play (along with numerous floods around the world always associated with Cancer). 

Why the Middle East?  Each region and country is associated with an astrological signature.  One key component of any astrological signature associated anywhere where Islam is strong is the sign Cancer.  Islam shares the underlying commonality of Pisces with Christianity as both came into existence in the Pisces age (along with Buddhism).  However Christianity formed near the peak expression of the Scorpio age-decan of the Pisces age (8 BC) while Islam formed much closer to the peak of the Cancer age-decan in 713 AD (see figure 3).

 This is why in Islam their view of paradise is closely associated with rivers (ruled by Cancer), they follow a lunar calendar (the Moon is the ruler of Cancer), and many female adherents either voluntarily or are forced to hide themselves away under burkas and veils (Cancer rules shyness and places a focus upon women).  These are just a few of the major Cancerian associations to Islam.

With the revolutionary Scorpio subage overflow (1970 – 2148) passing over the Cancer micro-age (2000 – 2015) it is reasonable to conclude that Scorpio’s revolutionary archetype will marry with Islamic Cancer to produce revolutionary ferment in the Middle East.  But this is not the end of the story.  Within the Cancer micro-age (2000 – 2015) are three micro-age decans of Pisces, Scorpio and Cancer in chronological order with the Scorpio micro-age decan influential from 2005 to 2015, and particularly in 2010, 2011 and 2012 (see figure 4).

This little Scorpio micro-age decan resonates with the Scorpio subage overflow (1970 – 2148) to create a veritable Scorpio hotspot.  Hotspots, like their name suggests, are more potent than their surrounding periods in stimulating action outside of the norm. Certainly the unrest in the Middle East is extraordinary.

Nevertheless the kind of revolutions we can expect will not, as a rule of thumb, be focused upon violence but with a firm preference to peaceful methods.  This is because the world is in the early stages of the Libra subage (1970 – 2148) and Libra is a peaceful sign opposite violent and militaristic Aries. This does not mean that those expressing revolutionary sentiment will not use force, but their use of force will be in most cases be in response to the force unleashed against them by power-mad autocrats.  Lest you judge these Middle Eastern societies harshly for their despotic rulers, anti-democratic ways and highly visible levels of corruption, you do not need go very far back in history to find the same abominable behavior in western society.  For whatever reason, the Aquarian age has arrived relatively early for the west, but it still took about 500 years to ensconce itself in Europe – Europe was a bloody nightmare for the first 500 years of the Aquarian age.  So we should not be harsh in our judgments of other society’s shortcomings.  The only real difference is that when the west went through its democratic catharsis over the last 500 years, no one was sitting on the sidelines criticizing or forcing them to be democratic with a gun held at their head as the USA did in Iraq. At least with the current Middle Eastern unrest, it is the vision of the citizens that is demanding the change – not an outside entity.
